'DUTCH POLICEMEN return with an empty rail hand-cart, near the village of Glimmen, The
Netherlands, yesterday from the train hijacked by South Moluccan terrorists ten days ago. A
request from the train for an ambulance raised hope briefly that some of the 55 hostages might
be released, but the request was eventually cancelled.

ASSEN, The Netherlands (P-
The Dutch government agreed
on yesterday to a request by
South Moluccan terrorists that
mediators be brought in to try
to end the tend-day-old twin
Sieges at a hijacked train and
a school.-
But the South Moluccans, hold-
ing about 60 hostages in the two
locations, immediately rejected
as unacceptable two persons
proposed by Dutch officials as
mediators, Justice Ministry
spokeswoman Toos Faher said,
She said the government had
earlier rejected the names of
two persons proposed by the
gunmen as mediators.
She did not identify any of
those rejected and said the next
move to find acceptable media-
tors was up to the government.
The South Moluccans had re-
quested mediation Tuesday. The
government response was delay-
ed while officials sought clarifi-
cation of the kind of mediation
and mediators the terrorists
wanted.
The gunmen had originally de-
manded freedom for 21 country-
men jailed for previous terror-
ist actions in Holland and a jum-
bo jet flight out of the country.
However, they had not mention-
ed the release of the jailed ter-
rorists in recent negotiations
with authorities.
Militants among the South
Moluccan immigrant communi-

ty in The Netherlands want the
Dutch to help them win inde-
pendence from Indonesia for
their Pacific island homeland, a
former Dutch colony.
Seven to 11 gunmen were hold-
ing at least 55 hostages aboard
the hijacked train, stopped in
the middle of pastureland eight
miles north of this northern
Dutch city. Another group of
four gunmen was holding four
teachers hostage at a village
school ten miles away.
Earlier yesterday, a call from
the train for an ambulance rais-
ed hopes that the terrorists
might begin releasing hostages,
but the hopes were dashed 90
minutes later when the call was
canceled.
About 90 minutes after the am-
bulance was requested at the
train, a woman medical student,
who is also a hostage, explained

to the authorities by telephone
that it would not be needed after
all. She said a male hostage had
felt sick for a few minutes but
recovered.
Dr. Dick Mulder, the psychia-
trist talking to the terrorists,
told the student that it was ur-
gent to get both Ellenbroek-Prin-
sen and the man to a hospital.
One of the terrorists then grab-
bed the telephone and said this
would not be done, a Justice
Ministry spokesman said. They
have repeatedly refused pleas
to release the woman.
