Climber conquers Trade Center Reserve Mining ordered

NEW YORK (AP) - An ama-
teur mountaineer' who designs
toys for a living scaled the
World Trade Center to its sum-
mit 110 stories above Manhat-
tan yesterday - then was
promptly taken into custody by
police who waited for him on
the roof.
George Willig of Queens, a
27-year-old graduate of St.
John's University booked a mod-
ified climbing rig into channels
used for washing the six-foot-
wide sheer aluminum strip on
the northeast corner of the south
tower of the nation's second-tal-
lest building.
"I COULD TELL right away
from talking to him he wasn't
crazy," said a police officer who
had tried to halt Willig midway
in the 3%-hour ascent. "He was
in complete control of himself."
He started at about 6:30 am.
EF)T and, as he progressed, a
neck-craning crowd of thousands
gathered to watch in the plaza
one-quarter-mile beneath the top
of the twin-towered building at
the tip of the island.
Willig emerged through a main-
tenance hatch on the 110th flpor
just after 10 a.m. into the wait-
ing arms of police officers, who
manacled the smiling and beard-
ed conquerer of a metal mono-
lith that two other daredevils
have defied in years past.
ONE POLICEMAN said Willig
told them he was using a stand-
ard mountaineering harness but
that he had designed and manu-
factured special grips to fit in-
side that guide the scaffolding
washers need to clean the cor-
ner.
Willig, climbing about a story
a minute when not resting, al-
ternated from the left to the
right channel. Standing with his
weight on his left foot, Willig
would shove the right grip high
into the right phannel while his
right knee was bent. Then he
would straighten his right leg,
sort of stand up and transfer
his weight to his right foot so
he could shove the left grip
up higher. -
By the time police arrived at
the foot of the 1,350-foot tow-
er, the man was out of ear-
shot. Four persons who helped
the climber get started were
arrested.

to start dump- construction
ST. PAUL, Minn. (UPI) - A federal judge yesterday lifted
a July 7 deadline for Reserve Mining Co. to stop dumping taco-
nite waste into Lake Superior but ordered the firm to start con-
struction of its on-land disposal basin next week.
U.S. District Judge Edward Devitt stayed his earlier order
on condition Reserve begin construction next Wednesday on
the taconite waste basin at Milepost 7 near Reserve's Silver
Bay processing plant on the north shore of Fake Superior.
HE ALSO SAID the firm must make every reasonable effort
to expedite construction in accordance with its submitted plan.
The judge directed federal and state agencies to give "ex-
peditious consideration" to Reserve's applications for the re-
quired permits to build the on-land disposal basin.
The judge directed Reserve to provide the stmte by June
21 with what is known as the "critical path schedules" and all
other information required to establish a detailed constrtuction
schedule.
