Page Twelve THE Reggie, Martin By The Associated Press NEW YORK - Turmoil continues to statk the New York Yankees. Their clubhouse sometimes resembles a time bomb, ticking toward what seems to be an in- ' evitable explosion. Except for a spurt that produced 14 victories in 16 games following a 2-8 start, the Yankees have been - less than scintillating on the field. Off it, however, they , have been fascinating, THE LATEST fireworks involve right fielder Reggie, Jackson, who homered Monday night but then dis pensed with the traditional handshaking with his team- mates. He deliberately avoided the corner of the dug- out where they had gathered to greet him. Jackson, benched in three of the previous six games because of a slump, has refused to talk with writers recently and shrugged off the handshake incident, claiming, "I had a bad hand." His teammates didn't buy that excuse. The most vocal was catcher Thurman Munson, who said, "He hurt his hand? He's a liar. How's that for a quote?" MUNSON WAS angry over a magazine article whichr appeared this week in which Jackson was quoted re- garding his relationship with the Yankee catcher dur- ing spring training. "I talk to him all the time," Jackson was qouted as "FOR A MAN saying about Munson. "Hut he is so jealous and nervous jealous of anyone and resentful that he can't stand it. If I wanted to, I imbecile," said M could just snap him. MANAGER BILLY MARTIN was irked by Jackson's action and said he would talk to his $2.9-million slugger and the rest of the team before tonight's game against Boston. Meanwhile, Martin continues to have problems of his own. He refused to talk to writers following a Saturday loss against Baltimore and raged at one writer who had1 pursued him into the players' lounge in the Yankee clubhouse-an area that is off-limits to the media. Martin, who has a history of problems with front offices when he managed in Minnesota, Detroit and Texas, has been at odds with the New York brass over a variety of subjects. HE WAS PARTICULARLY irked because the club re- sisted his request to promote veteran catcher Elrod Hendricks from Syracuse of the International League to serve as a third-string catcher. When he complained bitterly over the issue earlier this month, he was reprimanded publicly by President Gabe Paul and fined $2,500 for the outburst. Paul also pointed out that Martin had missed a meeting to dis- cuss the catching situation, a development that did not sit well with the front office. When Munson was injured in a collision at home plate Friday night, Fran Healy was the only healthy catcher on the squad. Hendricks then was brought in from Syra- cuse on a stand-by basis but has not been added to the roster. RUMORS CONTINUE that Martin, who signed a three-year contract after managing the Yankees to their first pennant in 12 years last season, will be fired because of his continuing feuds with the front office. One report had Yankee owner George Steinbrenne ready to dismiss Martin over the third catcher problei but that Paul had calmed the storm. gie s got te bos to think that Thurman Munson is that guy has to be ignorant and an unson after reading the article. snub had other Yankees more upset. d for," said center fielder Paul Blair. all. But before the fans had set- tled into their seats, California pitcher Nolan Ryan struck out three of the first four Tiger bat- ters he faced. Ryan duplicated his feat in the ninth and sealed a 2-1 victory for the streaking Angels. The Angels tallied their only two' runs in the second inning of1 Tiger starter John Hiller. Joe Rudi and Bobby Bonds led off the inning with con- secutive bloop singles. After Don Baylor popped out, first baseman Ron Jackson bounced a single to center to score Rudi. Bobby Grich fotlowsed with a sacrifice fly to bring Bonds home with the other Angel run. The Tiger'sone run came in the fourth inning after Jason Thompson and rookie Tim Cor- coran lashed back-to-back sin- gles. After a Ryan wild pitch ad- vanced both the runners, Ben- gal catcher Milt May bounced out to third, allaning Thompson to cross the plate. But the road to Ryan's sev- enth victory, ninth complete game, and 100th victory in the American League was not a smooth o n e. Although the swift-throwing righthander al- lowed only three hits and mowed d ow n the last 12 Detroiters in succession, he struggled with his control. throughout the contest. Altogether, Ryan walked sev- en, while striking out 12. Hiller, whose record dropped to 1-5, was nonetheless as sharp as he has been all year. The 34- year-old relief ace, making only his second start of the season, allowed the Angels only five hits, while going the distance. After the Angels scored their runs, Hiller retired 16 batters in a row, before walking Don Bay- lor with no outs in the seventh. The southpaw hurler received a standing ovation from the crowd after retiring California in the ninth.
