Friday, May 20, 197 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Fifteen " Friday, May 20, 917 THE MICHiGAN DAILY Page Fifteen 'M' golfers aim for second in Big Tens By GARY KICINSKI Michigan's golf team will try to break out of its fourth-place rut in conference competition when the Big Ten championships take place this weekend at Michigan State. THE WOLVERINES, who have placed fourth in each of the last three Big Ten meets, were encouraged by their perform- ance a week ago against defending champion Ohio State, when the linksters led after the first round but slipped in the second to lose by nine strokes. Michigan played without their number one golfer, Doug Davis in that match. However, the Buckeyes are still heavily favored to repeat as Big Ten champs. "Ohio State is far and away the best team in the north," said senior captain Ken Walchuck. "They probably have four of the top six Big Ten players on their team." HOWEVER, WALCHUCK maintains that "we're optimistic. We feel we can finish second, or may be pull an upset and beat Ohio State." Finishing second is important, since it may mean an NCAA tournament bid. The champion automatically qualifies for the national meet, to be held June 8-11 in Hamilton, New York. The Buckeyes appear primed for the conference meet after winning the Spartan Invitational two weeks ago in a meet which featured seven Big Ten teams. Not only did the Buckeyes win the tourney, but their record-breaking score of 727 over 36 holes indicates they should be more than happy to make an encore appearance. OHIO STATE'S Ralph Guarasci and Mark Balen finished one- two in the '76, Big Ten meet and went on to gain All-American ~tatws at the national championships. However, the Buckeyes get consistency from the entire team as teammates Rod Spittle, Rick Borg, and John Cook all placed head of the All-Americans in the Spartan Invitational. Michigan coach Bill Newcomb is relying on his experienced cen - Davis, Walchuck, John Morgan, and Tim Von Tongeren- so lead the Wolverine attack. Davis and Morgan both played ex- ol-lent on the Spartan course two weeks ago. The Wolverines expect their chief competition for second to come from Indiana, who placed runner-up in the Northern Inter- collegiate and third in both the Spartan and Kepler Invitationals. Hoosier Rob Jackson was medalist in the Northern Intercollegiate. DARKHORSE candidates include Minnesota, who have a pair of major tournament medalists in Miles Prestemon and freshman Ray Pontinen, and Michigan State, who may surprise some people oni their home cnourse. b.
