Also testifying' yesterday were patient Blain's wife, Cora Lee, and Bonnie Weston, who was a nursing assistant at the VA hospital during the summer of the mysterious breathing failures. Cora Lee Blain told the jury that on the day her husband suffered his brdathing failure, she had left the room early, leaving Barnett and "a littler nurse" in the room with Blain. WESTON testified later that she had seen Perez in Blain's room "checking his IV tubes" before the patient stopped breathing. Weston said that Perez was alone in the room with Blain. Defense attorneys attempted to impeach the testimony of both Cora Lee Blain and Nurse Weston by referring to state- ments the two had made to the grand jury last summer. Mrs. Ban had never told the grand jury about "a little nurse" be- ing in the room. Weston had testified before the grand jury Steer Clear of balding tires WASHINGTON (AP) - Bald tires, besides being much more likely to slip on wet roads, are 44 lines more likely to go flat than new tires, says the Tire Retread Information Bureau 'TRIB). Ninety per cent of tire trouble occurs when tires have 1/16th ( or ess) inches of tread remain- ig For safe driving, it is essen- tia to keep close tabs on bald- ing tires, TRIB advises. One way is to check the wear indicators built into all tires made after 1968, says TRIB. These wil appear horizontally across the tire's face when its tread gets below 1/16th inch., Another method is to insert a Lincoln's -head penny upside down into several of the tread grooves. If the top of Lincoln's head shows in any of them, the tire should be replaced. By far the most dramatic witness was Betty Jean Bar- nett who was not fazed even when shown that her testimony yesterday was in direct con- flict with testimony she made to the grand jury last sum- mer. Barnett's voice broke when she was questioned by defense attorney Edward Stein about her late brother. BUT WHEN Stein asked her if it was possible that she was confusing two different days, the witness quickly regained composure and said "impossi- ble!" When Barnett was asked who helped refresh her memory about the events on the day of the breathing failure the wit- ness said: "No one! I brought it back my own self!" Then Barnett snapped at Stein. "Have you ever lost someone who was close? Stein replied quietly, "Yes, I have." "From the 29th (of July) through August (of 1975)" Bar- nett said, "We went through mortal hell." Blain was admitted on July 29 and died August 29. AT THE Si DED:" *ER 0 N I STEVE'S LUNCH 1313 5.
