Blue 9 face crucial weekend By RICK MADDOCK The pressure is on the Wol- verine nine, this weekend, as both Wisconsin and Northwest- ern visit Fisher Field for cru- cial Big Ten doubleheaders. Currently, the Wolverines trail Minnesota by one game (10-2 vs. 9-3) in the Big Ten, with six games left. Minnesota hosts In- diana (3-7) today and Ohio State (5-3) tomorrow. The Gophers top the league in batting with a 310 average, and they also claim the best pitching staff with a shining 2.18 ERA. Wisconsin, holding a 7-7 con- ference record, confronts the Wolverines today at 1 pm. John Hnath, a second and third baseman, is the team's leading hitter at .484 in the Big Ten. First baseman Ran- dy Johnson holds a .396 aver- age. Randy Rennicke, a right hand- er, is seventh in the league with a 1.58 ERA. He holds an even 2-2 record. Alan Clark, also a righty, is tenth in the league boasting a 2.20 ERA and a 3-1 record. Last weekend Northwestern, 7-5 in the league, swept Wiscon- sin, 4-0 and 15-11. Catcher Dave Hogg, the Big Ten's "Athlete of the Week," went six-for-eight, knocking in all of Northwest- ern's runs in the opener. In the nightcap he was five-for-five, pinus a pair of home runs and seven RBI's. The Wildcats also have the Big Ten's leading hitter, Kurt Bruksch a shortstop. He is 20 for 40, connecting at a clean .500, in twelve league games. Both of Michigan's weekend opponents hold a better team batting average. Michigan is fifth with a .274 mark. The Badgers are four points better than the Wolverines, with a .278 spot. Northwestern is second in the league, hitting at a .300 clip. Michigan baseball coach Moby Benedict is not worried about his squad's hitting. "I can't be disappointed when we are scor- ing runs. If they walk a guy; I can't complain. It means he's not getting anything to hit," Benedict said. "Somedays you get twelve hits, and with the.same guys the next day you get three hits. It (hitting) also depends on pitching. It's a funny game - baseball," Benedict added. "When you play seven inning baseball games, that takes away two innings. They traditionally are not high scoring games," Benedict concluded. Pitching wise, the Wolverines are second to Minnesota in the league. Michigan boasts a 2.72 team ERA. Wisensin is fifth in the league showing a 4.21 EIA and Northwestern's staff has a ballooned 5.14 team ERA.
