The Spartans received a bIg lift at the expense of Michigan yesterday when unseeded Jody Ross, defeated the Wolverines' Kathy Karzen, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. Karzen was the tournament's number one seed and had easily defeated Cindy Gurman of Western Michigan in the first round, 6-1, 6-0. Ross' serve and volley game, however, proved too much for the Wolverine ace. "It was the most significant match of the day," ;aid Michigan coach John Atwood. "We were de- pending on Kathy a lot for points. Now Michigan State is in a real good position to win the tourna- ment." BEFORE PLAY began Michigan was regarded a the team to beat with the runner-up seen as itchigan State or possibly Central Michigan. Ross played super tennis," said Atwood. "I nt think she made any errors in the first set d very few in the third." Kathy's footwork was very slow and the wind didn't help that." "I didn't expect to win," said an elated Ross,.' "but I figured I had nothing to lose. I just went o'it and played and I won." ROSS ATTRIBUTED the win to her strong serve and volley game. Michigan did pick up a number of victories in other singles and doubles action, and finds itself with Barb Selden and Ann Kercher still alive going into today's quarterfinal action. Karzen and Selden also advanced to the quarterfinals of today's doubles competition. Selden disposed of Michigan State's Marjorie Kruger, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of play, fhen demolished Jane Shultze of Western Michigan 6-1, 6-2, in finding her way to the quarterfinals. Selden is the number three seed in the tourna- ment. KERCHER BREEZED through her opening round matches, bombing Cook of Michigan Tech 6-0, 6-1 and Wetnight of Western Michigan 6-2, 6-0. Michigan's only other singles player, Debbie Rentschler, won her opening match 6-0, 6-0, only to lose to second seed Debbie Mascarin of Mich- igan State 6-2, 6-1. The tournament continues today and tomorrow with the singles quarterfinal and semifinal match- es being played today along with the doubles quarterfinal matches.
