Nader's lawyers said the compensatory damages sought totaled some $2 million with many of the claims overlapping, although Gen- eral Motors said.Nader could have received as much as $26 million had the claims gone to trial. The case, which the attorneys said was settled out of court, stem- med from Nader's attack in 1966 on the failure of auto manufacturers, including General Motors, to design safe cars. The suit said that the GM investigation was designed "to harrass and intimidate" Nader so that he and other potential critics of GM products would be restrained from publicizing information about them. General Motors said in Detroit that settlement of the law suit at this time was considered desirable in order to avoid a very substantial additional expense and demands upon the time of corporation person- nel which could be incident to trial and subsequent appeal of the case, SPECIAL SHOWING Sunday, August 16 JEZEBEL dir.
