THE MICHIGAN DAILY 40 4; Page Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wednesday, August 5, 1970 4 Wednesday, August 5, 1970 Festival to feature varied bluesmen Festival to host varied bluesmen UNANIMOUS VOTI i By DEBRA THAL "What we have attempted to do with this year's Blues Festival is to provide a comprehensive cross-section of currently active blues- men. An effort has been made to balance the program not only with country and urban stylists, but also with performers representing most of the major geographical regions that have given birth to a unique blues style," said Chris Seltsam, publicity chairman of the Blues Festival. Many of the bluesmen come from Chicago but their styles within that grouping vary widely. One of the most popular of the Chicago musicians is Mighty Joe Young and his band, who will serve as the house band in this year's Blues Festival. Others who will play the more modern blues at the festival in- clude Houndog Taylor, an entertainer who plays bottleneck guitar; Luther Allison, an exciting guitarist who played last year; Jimmy Dawkins, whose complex but efficient guitar styles has earned him the nick name "Fast Fingers" and; Howlin' Wolf, a founder of the "Chi- cago Style" whose unique and gravely voice, backed by one of the tighest bands in Chicago, can produce an excitement that made him one of the biggest hits at last year's festival. Roosevelt Sykes, Little Brother Montgomery and Sun House will be playing their older Chicago style at the Festival; Mance Lips- comb, Bukka White and Robert P. Williams will perform folk style blues. (Continued from Page 2) Concerts will be held at Otis Spahn Memorial Field, next to Huron High on Friday, Satur- day a n d Sunday evenings at 6:30 and at noon Saturday and Sunday. An independent movie com- pany will film this year's festi- val and Warner Brothers will make a record of selected por- tions of the festival. There have been about 3,000 applications for campsites so far and festival officials a r e busy looking for housing. Ozone House is coordinating crash pads and crashers, so if any- one has an extra bed or floor space or needs one, they can call 769-6540. Several alumni groups, are also housing s o m e of the thousands expected. There should be very few po- lice officers around the festival grounds. Instead, theaPsyche- delic Rangers, who have been patrolling the weekly rock con- certs, will direct traffic a n d help out around t h e camping grounds. The festival's own Peace Force, clad in Festival T- shirts, will patrol inside the gates and should be contacted for help in case of any trouble. - There will also be an informa- tion tent near the entrance. The festival site near Huron High has been named Otis Spahn Memorial Field for the duration of the three days of beautiful blues, which John Lee Hooker, a legendary name among blues enthusiasts, begin Friday. plays simple, haunting direct music and he stands as one of the most - unique stylists that the blues has ever produced. Otis Rush pays an incredibly mellow guitar which is beautifully complimented by his soulful voice. He is truly one of the finest blues musicians around.
