Page Eight, THE MICHIGAN DAILY We nesday, July 29, 1970- Wednesday, July 29, 1970 U f- THE MICHIGAN DAILY CHICAGO EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT Kids were throwing rocks, botes...' For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 76 12 Iun Deatline Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 (EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an eye- witness account of the clash between police and youths Monday night in Chicago and the events leading up to it. It was obtained over the tele- phone from a reporter for two other news- papers, who asked that his name not be used because of his obligations to the other publi- cations.) I got to the bindshell area in Grant Park about four in the afternoon. People had been arriving since nine that morn- ing and about 75,000 people were there. The crowd was much bigger than the audience for the program that preceded the riots during the 1968 Democratic convention. The temperature was about 94 degrees, and it was very humid. Four large bleach- ers which had been set up were entirely filled. People were sprawled all over the area, sitting on top of concession stands and 60 foot-high speaker platforms. It had been advertised that Sly and the Family Stone would play, but the first band was a group called the Fat Water. People in the audience started yelling, "Sly, Sly." Someone made an announce- ment that Sly and the Family Stone would not play until everyone got down off the speaker stands and cleared the area directly in front of the bandshell' which was occupied by Andy Frain ushers. Andy Frain is the name of a private security force that was hired by Reach- out-Chicago's summer program to keep the blacks in the city cool. Right after this announcement was made a group of about 30 young black street kids rushed on to the stage and started taking off with microphones, am- plifiers and other band equipment. Then people in the audience started throwing bottles at the stage to try and get the kids off. The kids on stage ex- ited through a backstage door which opened out onto the police first aid sta- tion set up in the softball field north of the bandshell. Other people from the audience started joining the blacks who had been on stage in stoning the police behind the band- shell. One police car was overturned. At this point I was standing on the sidelines of the softball field behind the bandshell, but I heard that there were about 40 or 50 policemen in front of the bandshell throwing tear gas into the crowd.I More police came into the softball field area and battle lines started forming. There were about 400 police and close to 1,500 people from the audience. The front lines of each group were about 30 feet apart. The kids were throwing rocks, bottles, and anything they could grab at the police. Then about 50 white kids formed a line in front of the police as if to pro- tect them, flashing V's and shouting, "Peace, peace, peace," at the crowd. The police pulled these white kids off the field and began returning the volley of rocks to the crowd. Occasionally two or three cops would go after one individ- ual as he was leaving the area to arrest him, and plainclothesmen were going be- hind the lines of street people making arrests. During this time I heard two shots fired in front of the bandshell. Around 6:00 p.m. the battle started moving towards the north end of the field. and new front lines were formed on Balbo Drive which borders the softball field on the North. At that time the sky was becoming overcast and it had started to rain lightly. The kids, who were on the north side of the street, turned over a driving school car parked there and set it on fire. Then they moved into the police camp on the south side of Balbo Drive and turned over one police car. About 15 cars tried to get through the street during the battle, including one fire marshall's car. All of them were stonec. Kids were throwing a constant barrage of bottles and stones at the police lines. Manhole covers were being broken up and used as artillery. Three kids tore down a streetlamp and used it as a battering ram against the police. See THEN, Page 10 FOR RENT 1302 OLIVIA, all furnished, apt. 533-1993. Avail.
