Meaning "seven of the race," it refers to seven Latin youths accused of killing a policeman and beating his partner May 1, Siete 1969, when the officers stopped the youths for a burglary in- vestigation. Collections on behalf of Los Sete have been made at anti- war rallies. Latin youngsters have canvassed businesses, sell- ing candy to raise money for Los Siete. (;P) - The Harvard commencement was disrupted for nearly 15 minutes yesterday when a group of housing demonstrators took over the podium and demanded permission to speak. The group of about 30 had camped in Harvard Yard over night, demanding that Harvard give them a vacant lot which the Univer- sity owns so it can be used for low-income housing. Sandra Graham, spokesman for the group, was permitted to speak after she agreed to leave the podium when done. The group, residents of the riverside section qf Cambridge, said Wednesday night when about 300 of them entered Harvard Yard that the University has failed to act on a petition demanding use of the land, Mrs. Graham told the estimated 15,000 persons at the com- mencement that "this is our community and we are going to make it our community if we have to take it," Bloodsplit at Pentagon WASHINGTON OP) - Two teen-age antiwar protesters were arrested yesterday after spilling nine gallons of beef blood down the stairs at a Pentagon entrance. Arrested were Ed Entwistle, 19, and Claire Conlon, 18, both of Voluntown, Conn. Arresting police did not specify the charges. A spokesman said the two teen-agers and other members of the New England Community for Nonviolent Action had planned the demonstration about 10 days ago and had bought the beef blood for $2 a gallon from a slaughter house in Newark, N.J. About a dozen demonstrators, mostly youngsters, handed out Victims bility for Tuesday night's bomb- ing of New York's police head- quarters mentioned Los Siete. The letter, received by The As- sociated Press Wednesday, said in part: "The pigs in this country are our enemies. They have mur- dered Fred Hampton and tor- tured Joan Bird. They are re- sponsible for 6 black deaths in Augusta, 4 murders in K e n t State, the imprisonment of Los Siete de la Raza in San Fran- cisco and the continual brutal- ity against Latin and w h i t e youth on the lower East Side." The Weatherman are a splin- ter group of the Students for a Democratic Society. Although Bay area police have been plagued by bombings, they have connected none of the vio- lence to the Los Siete and their trial, which began after f i v e postponements, this week in San Francisco Superior Court. Only six are on trial, since the seventh has never been captured. Officer Joseph Brodnik, 41, was fatally shot in the May 1, 1969 incident, and his partner, Paul McGoran, 45, was knocked down and kicked, requiring hos- pitalization. McGoran contends one of the youths grabbed his weapon and- shot Brodnik. . The six were captured on a San Francisco Peninsula beach three days later, and were ac- cused of taking a couple's car and clothes at gunpoint. Charles Garry, chief attorney for the Black Panthers, says he will prove McGoran fired the fatal shot during a melee. Most of the trial postponements have been because of Garry's illness, from ulcers, and his preoccupa- tion with other cases. The defendants say McGoran taunted them with racial re- marks, and in his opening state- ment before a courtroom pack- ed w i t h Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans and Latin Amer- icans, Garry said: "We will prove t h a t every time McGoran got in front of a Mexican or a Negro or some other minority race, he would pull out his gun and wave it." A further delay in the trial was in prospect since Judge Joseph Karesh. said he would withdraw because of Garry's criticism of Karesh for permit- ting an attorney to make re- marks in court about black wit- nesses in a previous case where a policeman was acquitted of killing a black while the officer was off duty. Karesh also was criticized by defense attorneys for denying motions to have the trial con- ducted in Spanish, and to broaden the jury list to include Spanish-speaking persons prev- iously barred by now-illegal literacy test. of injustice?
