The official death toll so far has passed the 1,000 mark. Government spokesmen also said more than 200,000 persons were left homeless. * * * NORTH VIETNAMESE troops overran part of a government fire base in the far north Tuesday but were pushed back after inflicting heavy casualties on the South Vietnamese forces. The casualties were the worst reported in any attack on a South Vietnamese force since late March, when enemy troops overran a government fire base in the Mekong Delta and killed 67 and wounded 115. In another development, the State Department said Tuesday that Cambodians living in Thailand who volunteer to return to Cam- bodia for military duty will be armed and equipped under a U.S. military aid program. ORGANIZED LABOR'S leading economist Nathaniel Gold- finger said yesterday that the Nixon administration is pushing the nation's economy into a deepening recession that could plunge into a depression. Goldfinger, of the AFL-CIO, said President Nixon's anti-inflation policies show no sign of slowing the sharpest rise in living costs in 20 years despite the hopeful predictions of Nixon and his economic aides. "We have the worst inflation in 20 years; we have the sharpest increase in unemployment in 10 years; we have sky-high interest rates --higher than at any time in the past 100 years or more," Goldfinger said in a recorded radio interview. He also said that the resurgence of stock market prices in recent days had no real effect on the economy and criticized the Federal Reserve Board for reducing margin requirements for the purchase of stocks. * * MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE of Representatives seeking an early end to the Indochinese war will try to speed withdrawal by proposing a $6 billion defense spending cut today. They will try to write the cutback into legislation to increase government borrowing/authority which is scheduled for House action today. If they fail, the members will try to kill the measure to increase the government's debt ceiling which must be passed by July 1 if the government is to pay its pills. * * * LEGISLATION TO GIVE the President standby powers to control wages. prices and rents-powers President Nixon opposes --was introduced yesterday by 12 Democratic members of the House Banking Committee. Chairman Wright Patman (D-Tex), one of the sponsors, set hear-- ings to begin June 16. Witnesses will include officals of earlier ad- ministrations as well as the present one. They are expected to restate opposition to mandatory controls. By the terms of the legislation, the President would be authorized to issue orders and regulations to stabilize, prices, rents, wages and salaries at levels not less than those of May 25, 1970. The standby authority would expire Feb. 28, 1971.
