"The common program we run now has a possibility of 15 com- ments on a paper," Bishop says. "And I never used as many as 15." While most stories are run with a specific program, Bishop has also helped to develop a "General Stylistic" program, which can provide, limtied sorts of general comments on any sort of story. The first day of class, Bishop warns everyone that it is a computer course and encour- ages anyone to change sections if he or she wishes. A few us- ually do, and while the surviv- ors are usually just as wary, "re- sistance breaks down after the first couple of weeks," he asys. However, the benefits of the computer are not lost, Bis- hop says. "Years ago, 20 per cent of the students who passed I wouldn't recommend for news- paper jobs. Now it's ten per cent, or less."
