Michigan, Ypsilanti 483-1894 CALL, Colombia {' - The United States' young and in- experienced baseball team saw its title hopes virtually ex- tinguished yesterday when it lost to the Dominican Republic for its second defeat in the Pan- American Games. The baseball team lost its second game despite home runs by Willie Mims of the Univer- sity of Iowa and Fred Lynn of the University of Southern Cali- fornia. The U. S. was able to get only five hits off Jose Joaquin Tineo, who went the route for the Do- minican Republic. The Domini- cans blasted three U.S. pitchers for eight hits. Paul Patterson of Ithaca Col- lege was the starter and loser, replaced by Ed Bane of Arizona State in the fourth. Bane gave way to Pete Helt of the Univer- sity of Michigan in the sixth. In basketball, the U.S. team, the defending champions, was eliminated when Brazil beat Cuba 73-68. It will mark the first time the FLASH! LIBERTYL 665-7003 United States has failed to win the Pan-Am title. The result left Cuba, Brazil and the United States all with 2-1 records in the four-team Group B. Only two can qualify for the final playoffs in each of three groups. The only way the United States could have been elimi- sated was for Brazil to win and win by less than seven points. They won by five. A Cuban victory would have placed the United States in thej playoff, and Brazil would have been out. The United States lost to Cuba and beat Brazil. Overall, the United States leads in total medals with 108, 49 gold, followed by Cuba, with 69, including 18 golds, and Ca- nada 30, of which seven are gold. 1 u i1/2 MICHIGAN REPERTORY STONIGHT - phillip hayes dean's THE GHOST DANCERS world premiere LYDIA MENDELSSOHN Tickets $1 .50-$2.50 Box Office Open 12:30-8:00 p.m.Ph.668-630 DID YOUR MOTHER SEND YOU TO COLLEGE TO DO THIS ?
