(Continued from Page 4) the administration was led to overreact by those same stories. Feldkamp's original statements in the papers should have been sufficient to deal with the prob- lem. He stated that nothing had actually changed, while steering clear of the issues raised by De- Grieck's quote - precisely the line which the University was compelled to follow. FLEMING: We will do every- thing in our power . . . contributions produced a hot new angle. The media blitz that time was almost overwhelming, but official administration response was confined to Feldkamp's re- iteration of his original state- ment. Had Fleming desired the fo- rum he was apparently seeking at the time of the Regents' meeting, he could have seized the second bout of stories as an opportunity for one. How- ever, no official pronouncement of any kind was forthcoming from him, and so it seems that, for the time being at least, he is content with allowing t h e matter to die of its own accord. Overall, the picture which emerges is one of the news me- dia, on one hand, adroitly ex- ploiting sex to sell newspapers, and the administration, on t h e other, flailing at targets which it either could not or dared not hit. Feldkamp emerged as a level- headed administrator, who managed to maintain his cred- ibility by not denying at any time that the rule had been eli- minated. Fleming, in his at- tempt to backtrack and say that To The Daily: OF THE PAST TEN years I have lived intermittently six in Ann Arbor, and I have always thought with pride of It. Attending this year's Art Fair I was shocked when I saw how filthy and uncared-for the Diag- onal looked. I can only hope thati this neglect and abuse was due to the influx of outsiders during the Fair. However, if this should be. a false hope, I would appreciate if the proper authorities would re- mind those guitar strumming, singing flower children that it is their earth, their campus they are besmirching. If this is an example of what the new freedom of their life style does to envtronment and personal appearance, then please give me back what that much- maligned establishment did offer. "the rule" would be enforced, comes off less favorably. THE ONLY winners of the controversy 'are the various stringers who profited through publication of their stories and those who managed to stay on the sidelines and derive a some- what voyeuristic pleasure from it all. The losers are the Uni- versity itself, both in terms of money and prestige, and t h e credibility of Robben Fleming, its president. Ironically enough, everyone around the University - and that includes President Flem- ing - knows that despite t he furor, and the conciliating let- ter and promises, nothing and no one can stop people from living as they please in the dorms. -J.M., R.B.
