THE WORLD'S LARGEST CONSUMER OF MINERALS, the
U.S., faces an acute shortage of raw materials in the coming
decades, Interior Department officials told Congress yesterday.
Nationalization of mines abroad, rising environmental costs
and lack of technology to profitably extract deep lying or low
grade ores combine to restrict the availability of the materials,
said Hollis Dole, assistant secretary of the Interior.
He noted that the U.S. has consumed more minerals since
1940 than had been used by the entire world before then, and
that the coutnry faces a growing dependency on the supplies of
foreign countries, who themselves are increasingly demanding
mineral resources to improve their own standards of living.
Dole remarked that "the nationalization of resources by these
countries . . . has treatened to decrease the availability of raw
materials for the U.S."
MOON-MEN David Scott and James Irwin blasted off from
the moon in their lunar module, Falcon, yesterday afternoon
with 230 pounds of rocks and successfully linked up with their
mother ship, commanded by Alfred Worden.
"It just happened so fast," said Mary Irwin commenting on
the first television broadcast earthlings had ever seen of a lunar
module blasting from the moon. "It was just like fireworks."
For two more days they will orbit the moon, conducting photo-
graphic and other experiments from some 60 miles above the lunar
surface, Splashdown in the Pacific is scheduled for Saturday at
3:4e EST.
THE UNITED STATES will favor seating the People's Re-
public of China in the United Nations at the General Assembly
meeting this fall but will oppose any move to oust the Chinese
Nationalists, Secretary of State William Rogers announced
yesterday.
Taiwin indicated yesterday that it accepts the new U.S.
policy in a departure from its old stance firmly against seating
both Chinese governments in the U.N.
The People's Republic of China and Algeria said yesterday
that they will not tolerate a "two-China" policy in the United
Nations and demanded withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Formosa
and the Formosa Straits.
