The soldiers were part of a contingent sent to a secret camp to be trained by the CIA. In- stead of returning to Cambod- ia, as planned, they were used in a recent battle on the Bolo- veas Plateau. Official circles are reluctant to discuss Cambodia's involve- ment in Laos, however, as the action violates the 1962 Geneva agreements and the hard press- ed Cambodians are reluctant to admit that they have soldiers to spare. )gOIY56Y ODY4E.Y* 0: THURS., FRI., SAT.-JULY 29, 30, 31 featuring o B RAT no increase in price 50c cover 9:30-1 :30 A.M. 208 W. OY5 Apparently one reason for the use of Laos for training was that it enabled CIA oper- atives to circumvent the Coop- er-Church amendment banning U.S. military advisors, training teams or combat soldiers from Cambodian soil. Disolution with the project soon grew among Americans and Cambodians, however. Cambodian troops reportedly felt they had been used for the worst of the fighting while American personnel complained of a lack of cooperation among Cambodian officers. As a result of this wrangling, the program has been term- inated. Choose a without risking a bad haircut NOW 4 SHOPS . ARBORLAND * MAPLE VILLAGE - LIBERTY OFF STATE *EAST UNIV. AT SO. UNIV. THE DASCOLA BARBERS THE SUDAN'S relations with the Soviet Union appeared in jeopardy today as a result of the African country's anti- Communist purge, Sudanese President Jaafar el Numairi ordered Communist party leader Abdull Khalek Mahjoub hanged yesterday after a military tribunal convicted him of engineering the abortive coup which temporarily onsted Numairi from power. The Soviet Union has been the chief source of arms for Sudan, and it is probable that Soviet rifles were used to kill some of the pro-Communists who have died before firing squads. Moscow has roundly criticized the "bloody terror in Sudan," but whether the U.S.S.R. will continue to aid the Arab country is as yet unclear. THE U.S. BOARD OF PAROLE yesterday denied the appli- cation by antiwar priests Phillip and Daniel Berrigan for early release from prison terms for destruction of draft records. The case of Phillip Berrigan, who is accused of plotting to kidnap presidential adviser Henry Kissinger, will be reviewed by the board in January of 1973, board chairman George Reed said. Reed said the board decided that Daniel Berrigan should re- main in prison until his mandatory release with time off for good behaviour on Nov. 23. 1972. A CONSUMER ADVOCATE said yesterday that an independ- ent government commission is needed to protect children from hazardous toys. Boston Attorney Edward M. Swartz demonstrated toy rock- ets, dolls, pistols, goggles and blankets he says can cut, bruise or burn children and condemned the Food and Drug Administra- tion for being "discouragingly slow with respect to their approach to dangerous toys" at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing. Swartz said that many "industry and government spokesmen seem to demand an actual body count before determining a toy or other product to be dangerous." A SWEEP by South Vietnamese troops in eastern Cambodia launched early yesterday made only minor contact with Com- munist forces in the area. The failure to meet any resistance by Communist troops has led the U.S. command to believe that such forces have pulled back from the entire area. Meanwhile, the month-long lull persisted in South Vietnam and U.S. sourecs reported only minor skirmishes and small shell- ings of U.S. bases. U.S. B-52 bombers flew raids inside both Cam- bodia and Laos yesterday. APOLLO 15 ASTRONAUTS, their spacecraft streaking tow- ards the moon in defiance of minor problems aboard the ship, blindfolded themselves yesterday to observe the reaction on their eyes and brains to a piercing of cosmic rays. a* ,f- COMPLAINT? *. missing out on some of the DAILIES because of delivery mistakes?
