Announcing
THE GOQL EARrH
C.,aic'n trem PJoe 12j
versity Activities Center 'UAC,
are sponsoring the Ann Arbor
lg'e Arts Festival to be held on
East University Street simul-
taneously w: ith the Ann Arbor
Street Fair. The scheduling of
the Free F('atival at the time ot,
and its proximity to the Street
Fair has caused a certain
a m o u n t of bitterness among
thf organizers of the latter.
Ifey feel that the Festival is
rether parasitic and resent the
fact that it is taking advantage
of the large suma of money and
amounts of time that they have
put into organizing and publi-
cizing the fair. The presence of
the Festival and its unjuried
f@mat also undercut the pur-
poses of the Street Fair which
has quite purposely limited its
size and tried to control its
quality. Finally, there is a cer-
tain amount of chauvinistic
pride in the Street Fair which
has been built up by the efforts
of the organizers, into an event
of national scope. They are
atraid that the Festival will he
confused with the Fair to the
Fair's detriment.
It is c rtainly true that the
two will (despite a buffer
zone on E. Uniiversity between
them) be associated in the
minds of the spectators, but it
will not be clear until after the
festivities are under way whe-
ther this will be to the detri-
int of either of the fairs. The
Free Festival seems to be shap-
ing up to more than a flea
market and could very well pro-
vide some new things for the
long weekend. A variety of en-
tertainments are scheduled in-
cluding folk dancing and mu-
sic, movies on the Diag, Rock
and Roll, and the RC Players
(who will be performing cuts
from their production of Mo-
liere's The Miser). The Festi- Natural Foods * Vitamins * Books on Nui
val is also planning on having
reasonably priced food booths NtrIP~fft lani; iI
and cheap community organic Natural Cosmetics * ietectic Foods
dinners. Hopefully the exhibi-
tors will provide a market which
does not duplicate that of the Located in KERRYTOWN-The Exciting Place
Street Fair.iThe loose structure Shop for All Your Food.Needs
of the Festival will give it a
chance to generate a brio that
is lacking from the more or- 407 N. Fifth Open Ever
ganized Fair, but also leaves Adjacent to the Farmer's Market Except Sun
the possibility of falling into
chaos and huckstering.
