The unveilinsg and dedication scheduled for today at 2. will include speakers and entertain- ers. Many celebrities of Nation- al reputation have committed themselves to appear - politi- cians, athletes, artists, dancers and a host of others. The event promises to be a gaal affair. It is outdoors, free and open to the public. By 1966, the fair had grown to over 301 artists and the oro- ganizers decided that "rather than letting the fair wriggle like a caterpillar from S. University down to Main St." they would freeze tthe fair at that size whict1 they felt. could be covered by a spectator durinig tite course of a day. An accepting committee was set up to jury applicants on te criteriot of quality Tils yt at tho comtitittee looked at several thousand slides over a period of two months to s'lrct 127 new ar- tists from 365 applicants. The aitists on thr street are juried during the fair by the commit- tee and also by other Suetem, Fair artiss vho 'sork in the same inedtinm. This policy has ledrto some bit- terness in the town because it has resulted in the exclusion of local artists in favor of artistt from out of town and out of state. The organizers defend their policy ott the grounds that they don't want the fair to be- come 'inbred', that they want to bring something new into the local art scene. Either only, or fully (depending on yoW viewpointi a third of the ar- tists this year will be from Ann Arbor, the rest coming from 15 other states and Canada. It is true that there are local artists ssho are as good as the ones cho arrive hore from out ot townt, but it is nlot st~iays ?Eesi that the visiting artists provie some of the best work in th fair and also do provide lhins that Ann Arbor does not.
