DAILY STREET ART FAIR SUPPLEMENT Page Three-S Stratford is another word for fun This year they are doing Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth, and Webster's The Duchess of Malfi. Jonson's Volpone will open in mid-July. The Duchess of Malfi, by John Webster, is a violent story which traces the dissolution of a powerful family of Renais- sance Italy through greed, van- ity and an overwhelming drive to power. The acting in The Duchess is superb, as the characters are to be believed. Pat Galloway. Powys Thomas and Roland He- will, who act in the three lead- ing roles. give exceptional and involving performances. Light and stage effects aid in the creation of "real atmos- pheres. During the excommunication scene, the lighters cause a thunder and lightning storm, as the eerie pope enters and spreads incense throughout the theatre; further bringing the audience into the play. -The presentation of Macbeth is anticlimatic if seen after The Duchess of Malfi. Many of the same actors play in both tragedies, but do not come across as powerfully in Macbeth as in The Duchess, Jean Gascon, from England, directs a mod- ernized, low-key delivery as op- posed to the traditional more flamboyant method. Yet, iron- ically, to compensate for the lack of curtains. Gascon cre- ates an army that storms across the stage flashing shields, and performance. The play loses im- pact 'during the final sword fight when Ian Hogg, as Mac- beth, dies melodramatically- and the audience laughs.
