IVEGY OF ENGLAND Flood renews attacks on reserve clause CHAMPIONSHIP CHESS: Fisher clubs Larsen WASHINGTON (J) - Curt Flood, the controversial out- fielder who sued baseball for $3.1 million, has asked the Su- preme Court to invalidate the sport's reserve clause. In a brief filed by his attor- neys, Flood said organized base- ball has violated the antitrust laws with its reserve system, which binds a player to one club for life unless he is traded or sold. "It needs no argument to demonstrate that o r g a n i z e d baseball is now interstate com- merce," said Flood's lawyers in argument against baseball's ex- emption from antitrust .laws. They said the Supreme Court had ruled against other professional sports in that area, Flood was represented by Ar- thur J. Goldberg, former Su- preme Court Justice and Ambassa- dor to the United Nations, and Jay H. Topkis of New York City. His suit against baseball came in 1970 when he refused to report to the Philadelphia Phillie after he was traded by the Car- dinals. Flood's suit against baseball was dismissed by District Judge Irving Ben Cooper. That deci- sion was affirmed by a three- judge U.S. Circuit Court of Ap- peals. He alleged in those courts, as before the Supreme Court, that nationwide baseball agreements among clubs restricts players to contract negotiations with the first club that employs or "re- serves" them or with assignee clubs-in other words, clubs to which they may be traded. Flood told the Supreme Court that baseball has changed since its 1953 decision reaffirming the game's exemption from the anti- trust laws. By BEN CRANE and BILL DINNER Two of the heat chess play- ers in the worldtoday are Hub- by Fisher of the United States and Bert Larsen of Denmark. They are currently engaged in a 10 game qualifying match in the world championship series. The winner of the match will have a chance to confront the World Champion, Boris Spassky of the USSR for the title in 1972. Some chess experts, amazed by Fisher's 6-0 slaughter of Soviet Grandmaster Mark Tai- manov in the quarter f i n a l s have predicted that Larsen will meet the same fate. If Fisher's stunning vi c t o r y over Larsen in the first game of the match, held Tuesday in Denver, Colorado, is any indi- cation, a route could be in pro- gress. Fisher and Larsen have met many times before in tourna- ment play, with Fisher holding a good advantage. Larsen, how- ever, has several fine victories to his credit. Larsen's choice of F r e n c h defense in the first game came as a surprise, one of several he said he had for Fisher. How- ever, it backfired. Larsen's 11. . . . p-B3 is pro- bably a mistake.
