16 POLICEMEN ARRESTED:
FBI raids Detroit
gambling syndicate
DETROIT A') -- Over 400 FBI agents moved through
Detroit and outstate areas yesterday, arresting 150 persons,
including 16 police officers and a police inspector, in a
raid on a $15-million-a-year illegal gambling syndicate.
The inassive operation, netting the largest numbers of
arrests of any such raid in U.S. history, was carried out by
Detroit FBI chief Niel Welsh. Welsh said he had the com-
plete cooperation of the Detroit police department in the
investigations which led up to the arrests.
