Orr inks Kettering's Johnson The rich get richer or so it seemed as far as Michigan basketball fortunes were con- cerned yesterday as Wolverine basketball coach John Orr an- nounced the signing of a letter of intent by still another fine player, Joe Johnson of Detroit Kettering. Johnson, a 6-0, 150 pound, extremely fast guard, a team- mate of Lindsay Hairston, con- trolled the ball for the fine Kettering team that captured the state championship. Cash's triple and Freehan's USC defends diamond title; upends SIU OMAHA (AP) - Southern Cali- fornia parlayed 10 hits and the pitching of Steve Busby into a 7-2 victory over Southern Illinois last night, successfully defending its College=World Series Title. The title was the seventh for the top - ranked Trojans - and their third in four years. Coach Bob Dedeaux' team finished with a 53-13 record. Third - ranked Southern Illinois 43-9 took a 1-0 lead in the sec- and inning on singles by Dan Radison and 'Larry Calufelli, plus a sacrifice fly, but USC scored in each of the next three iniings for a 5-1 lead. Reds rout Braves CINCINNATI-Jim McGloth- lin scattered seven hits to com- plete his first game of the year and Lee May knocked in three runs as the Cincinnati Reds stopped the Atlanrta Braves 5-1 last night. The Braves reached McGloth- lin for their only run in the first when Sonny Jackson singled and eventually scored on an- other single by Darrell Evans. The Reds took the lead with two runs in the third as Hal McRae's single scored one run and May's sacrifice the other. George Foster, who tripled to open the fourth, scored on a ground-out by Pat Corrales, and Cincinnati got another run in the fifth on successive doubles by McRae and May.
