Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wednesday, June 16, 1971 Untimely bash drops Tigers . From Wire Service Reports Joe Horlen celebrated his anniversary a little early last night. Saturday was to have been the first anniversary of Horlen's last major league vic- tory, but Horlen couldn't wait that long to get another. So last night the White Sox hurler stopped the Detroit Ti- gers on eight hits, while benefit- ing from three homers, as Chi- cago won, 6-i. Bill Melton smacked his sec- ond grand slam and fourth homer of the year and Mike Hershberger and Rich McKin- ney added round trippers, as Mike Kilkenny pitched accord- ing to form. . Actually, Horlen, a former American League earned run average champion, and Kilken- ny were locked in tight duel for five innings. All was not bleak for the Bengals, however. Gates Brown tripled in the eighth to become the greatest pinch-hitter in AL history, passing former Tiger Bob Fothergill, with 77. He now ranks seventh on the major league list. The Tigers didn't lose any ground on first-place Balti- more, who got nipped by a ninth inning home run by clutch-hitter John Briggs of Milwaukee, 6-5. The Orioles, who didn't use to lose 'em this way, had a 4-0 lead in the first. It was only their second loss in 12 games. Conversely, it was Milwaukee's second win in 11. A homer apiece by the Rob- by's were wasted, but a two- run shot by Tommy Harper off Jim Palmer wasn't. In the tight National League East, Pittsburgh stretched its lead to 31i2 games over New York, which fell into a virtual tie with St. Louis.
