The McLaren racing team has now won 30 of the last 34 races in the Canadien-American Challenge Cup series and while this year they may have more trouble than in the past their domination should continue. The Cam-Am is a six year old series for Group seven r a c e cars which have two seats, are full bodied and have no restric- tions on engine or body size. Denis Hulme beat teammate Peter Revson in the first race this year as Mosport Sunday after former world driving champion Jackie Stewart drop- ped out of the race while lead- ing on the 19th lap. Third place Lothar Motschen- bacher, the best private e n - trant, was more than t h r e e miles behind at the end of the 200 mile race. After the race, the McLaren team showed its confidence. When asked if they would sweep the series, Hulme, also a forer' world champion. aid, "I think so." "Jackie passed me when I had trouble with a backmarker at the hairpin," he said. "After I was passed I wasn't too worried. I was prepared to sit back and wait since I was confident we Would win." >'°ulme said that he welcomed Jackie Stewart competition. "I do better with competition," he said. "It makes me think about my driv- ing." The McLaren team has won the series for the past four years by being ready for t h e first race while everyone e 1 s e was still testing their cars and by having the most advanced design. The only serious challenger even to show up at Mosport was Stewart and his car was not as thoroughly tested as the McLarens. Stewart's car, a Lola T-260, is newly designed by Eric Broadley and is unusual in that it has its radiator in back. Stewart will be the biggest challenger to the McLarens. He won the pole at Mosport b u t Hulme grabbed the lead at the start. "I was not going as fast as I could because the throttle was sticking open," Stewart ex- plained. Hulme did not think it was clear which of the cars was more powerful. Jackie Oliver, who gave t h e McLarens competition in a few races last year in the Autocoast Ti-22, will be driving the UOP Shadow, a new car by Ti-22 builder Peter Bryant. McLaren team manager Ted- dy Mayer said, "The Porsches will give us a lot of trouble." It has been speculated that Porsche would enter a factory team now that it has won the World Manufacturer's Champ- ionship. Porsches have not been com- petitive because of a lack of power, but a new turbo-charged engine may give them over 700 horsepower. Jo Siffert is likely to drive the car if it appears. Ferrari has also been talked about as a competitor, but, sev- eral new 427 cubic inch engines have blown up during testing. If one is entered, which is not likely, it will probably be for Mario Andretti. Pedro Rodriguez will be running a BPM and may be competitive. He drove a BRM last year but could not chal- lenge the McLarens. While there will be a few private entrants who run well, they will not be able to keep up with the McLarens and S t e- wart. Only Oliver and the European factory teams have any chance to do that and keep the races from being b o r i n g parades.
