U.S. plans Alcatraz park after Indians' eviction Four women three of them with their hands bound in front of them -- and three men died almost instantly of gunshot wounds fired at point b 1 a n k range into their heads. An eighth victim, wounded in the chest, was in Ford Hospital. Three other occupants of the first floor flat dove out of the windows to escape the hail of bullets, police said. The t h r e e surrendered at a nearby police station and were being ques- tioned by some of the 20 detec- tives assigned to the case. District Inspector James Ban- non said police found several hand guns and two long guns in the home, plus a quantity of dope and narcotics, needles and other paraphernalia. Newspaper accounts said the seven slayings brought to 25 the number of persons slain this year in the continuing war for control of Detroit's rich narcotics traffic. SAN FRANCISCO (P) - The government plans to fashion Al- catraz Island - seized from American Indians who held it as a protest symbol for 19 months -into a wildrness-type national park, a federal official said Sat- urday. No plans for a park were an- nounced until yesterday, three days after the island was seized from the Indians. Twenty armed U.S. marshals raided the rocky island in San Francisco Bay last Friday and removed the remaining band of 15 Indians, mostly women and children lunching on canned chile beans. U.S. Atty. James Borwning Jr. said the seizure was touched off after three Indians were arrested Friday. Police said they stole $80 of government-owned cop- per wire, then sold it in San Francisco. "The government has always lied to us and ripped- off our rights." Trudell said however there are no Indian plans now to try to re- take the island, guarded by 30 marshals. Trudell said the In- dians' first priority is finding homes and food for their women and children. Mr. Metzger has never quite attained Joseph von Sternberg's feeling for dazzling decadence, but he has the master's humorlessness, and though his production of spectacle has been limited by his budgets, he is every bit as morally uplifting...preoccupied by the way nude bodies and sexual acts look when photographed sideways, in zoomy long shots, in roving close-ups....ripe with incredible color and decor and movement." --Vincent Canby, N.Y.
