He flew immediately afterward to Cali- fornia to join the team in Ana- heim. Broberg, the Senators' No. 5 selection in the secondary phase of the baseball draft, and Jos- 4 eph Burke, the club's- vice pres- ident for administration, de- clined to give the amount which D ssign the young right-handed pitcher received as a bonus. Burke said manager Ted Williams wanted to work with Broberg a little before he puts him in a game. Buffalo nabs star BUFFALO, NT. - J. D. Hill, the Buffalo Bills' No. 1 draft choice, signed a National Foot- ball League contract with the Buffalo team yesterday. Hill, a 6-foot-1, 191-pound wide receiver from Arizona State, gave the Bills a battle before signing his contract. Dartmouth hurler "After about three sessions of indian wrestling with J. D. Hill, we finally came to terms" said Pat McGroder, a Bills' vice president who had scouted him, "It wasn't easy, but I think we have a potential superstar." Hill, a 9.3 sprinter, will be used as a wide receiver on the kickoff and punt return teams, Coach John Bauch said at a news conference. Simpson to rejoin Reds CINCINNATI - The Cincin- nati Reds announced yesterday that pitcher Wayne Simpson will be recalled from Indiana- polis of the American Associa- tion in an attempt to bolster the Reds weak pitching. Simpson, who posted a 14-3 mark last summer, injured his arm midway through last sea- son and has been attempting to come back this year. Cards get Santorini ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals Friday traded out- fielder Leron Lee and left- handed pitcher Fred N o r ma n to the San Diego Padres for right-handed pitcher Al San- torini. The 23-year-old Lee, who hit .227 for the Cardinals in 1970, had a batting mark of .179, mostly in pinch-hit roles, this season. The-Cardinals acquired t h e 28-year-old Norman on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers Sept. 28 and outrighted his contract to Tulsa of the Amer- ican Association in April. Santorini, 23, posted a 1-8 record for San Diego in 1970 and was 0-2 in 18 appearances this season. Norman, since sent to the Cardinals' Tulsa farm club, had posted a 6-1 record. Hall of Fame dropout TORONTO - Conn Smyth, commenting that "standards are going down everywhere to- day," has resigned as chairman of the governing committee of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Smythe, the man who built Maple Leaf Gardens 40 years ago and made his Toronto team a power in the National Hockey League, quit over induction of the late Harvey Busher Jackson to the Hall. Jackson, a member of the famed Kid Line of the M a p le Leafs with Joe Primeau and the late Charley Conacher, died in 1966 .
