Employe ends picketing,

to join the American Federation
of State, County and Municipal
Employes (AFSCME), which rep-
resents University service and
maintenance employes. In a leaf-
* let distributed on campus Tues-
day, Pedit claimed he was fired
Mar. 16 because of his attempts
to join AFSCME.
Rehired four days after the
firing, Pedit proceeded to meet
with representatives of AFSCME
to work for the adoption of a list
of demands, including the unioni-
zation of the position of press-
man's helper, a definition of the
position's duties with pay com-
mensrate for those duties.

ject to up to five years and
$5,000.
Possession of -such hard drugs
as heroin, morphine, cocaine and
opium would remain felonies, but
the maximum penalties would be
reduced to four years in prison
or a $2,000 fine.
Under the new bill, use of mari-
juana would remain subject to
up to one year and $2,000, as un-
der present law.
Observers say the bill, which
is backed by Gov. William Mil-
liken and whose penalty pro-
visions coincide closely with
recommendations made by Milli-
A ken to the legislature last
March, is expected to face a
tough fight in the Senate.
A chief issue of controversy
is a provision authorizing an of-
ficer to make an arrest if he has
"reasonable" grounds for be-
lieving a person is using or in
A, possession of marijuana.

Considering Pedit's position
within the realm of AFSCME's
collective bargaining jurisdic-
tion, union representatives pur-
sued the case and called for a
special conference with the Uni-
versity and the publications
board.
At that conference May 10, the
union requested that the Univer-
sity clarify Pedit's status. Dur-
ing the time in question, he had
been classified first as a student
and later as a temporary em-
ploye.
Pedit was not in school at the
time and the union contends the
job was not temporary by the
definitions of the present AFSC-
ME contract with the University.
The contract excludes both stu-
dent and temporary employes
from becoming members of the
bargaining unit.
As he ended his fasting and
picketing yesterday, Pedit said,
"It has been successful in that
I've gotten the University to re-
ply. The purpose of the protest
was to get some action from the
University. Now the union can
go on and take further steps."
