Mullaney

LOS ANGELES - Joe Mulla-
ney has been removed as coach
of the Los Angeles Lakers and
offered an administrative posi-
tion with the National Basketball
Association team, General Man-
ager Fred Schaus said yester-
day.
Mullaney coached the Lakers
the past two seasons after suc-
ceeding Bill van Breda Kolff,
who went to the Detroit Pistons
o of the NBA.
There was no official explana-
tio for the Lakers' move but
sources close to the team point

nounced yesterday he is retiring
from the Stanley Cup champion

Howell retires
PHILADELPHIA - Bailey
Howell, a 12-year veterans in the
National Basketball Association,
has decided to call it a career.
The 34-year-old Howell in-
formed the Philadelphia 76ers
yesterday he is retiring from
basketball and returning to his
Starkville, Miss., home to a full
time job in insurance.
Howell, who helped the Boston
Celtics win two of their many
NBA titles, came to the 76ers last
year from Buffalo where he had
landed in an expansion Jraft.
