SHELTER,

(Continued from Page 2)
The most amazing experence
for me was being backstage. The
pathetically grotesque groupies,
the people trying to claw their
way up the rock power structure,
and the interminable hassles with
managers, stage crew, and people
mobbing the stage cast a dark
shadow over the whole event. At
one point there was even a fight
backstage when somebody pulled
the plug on Mitch Ryder's group
and allegedly poured beer on
him because he went overtime.
Some of the musicians seemed
genuinely friendly, s t a y i n g
around for the whole Revival -
Boz Scaggs, Skip Van Winkle,
Mitch Ryder, and some of the
back-up muSicians. For the most
part, though, rock seems to be
just as unattractive and disgus-
ing as any other business.
I guess the best indication of
the general atmosphere is that I
saw very few people leaving the
place in a happy state of mind.
The music, the drugs and booze,
the environment, the crowd's be-
havior, or something else had
bummed out just about everyone.
At least there was enough good
music to make the trip to De-
troit worthwhile.
The alienation and hostility
that living in Detroit breeds into
people manifests itself in their
taste in music, and that music in
turn exacerbates those feelings
and draws them out into the open.
