Thursday, May 27, 1971 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Credit Union proposes housing plan Page Seven I (Continued from Page 1) The two programs are entirely separate, however, according to Peter Ostafin, associate director of student community relations and secretary to UCU. Ostafin says the CHP program is primarily for additional single a student accommodations, while the UCU project is not actually a University project, but relates to people associated with the University community. Ostafin describes the UCU project as "exquisite," and says it would "do justice to the beau- f. tiful site" - 25 acres on the northwest egment of the inter- section of Huron Parkway and Glacier Way, just east of the Arborcrest Cemetery-presently owned by the University. The Regents approved reser- vation of the site for the UCU f project in July, 1970, provided UCU made substantial progress toward effectuating the plan. The University is expected to sell the land to the corporation for around $300,000. "We have designed quite an SBirdproblems (Continued from Page 1) quite sure who initiated the an- ti-pigeon campaign. President Robben Fleming says he "re- members seeing a letter with something about it," but refers questions to James Brinkerhoff, director of business operations at the University. Brinkerhoff says it is not his office, but Donald Wendel's Plant Department that knows about the program of bird re- '~pelling. And Wendell himself is alo elusive about the subject. He is unable to give either the number of buildings that were being treated with Avitrol until the advent of the ban earler this week, or an approximation AV of the cost of the program. Wendel also professed, until The Daily informed him to the contrary, that Avitrol would not kill birds. "It is probably just too rich for the housing authority's blood." UCU V i c e President Arthur Reed, Grad, agrees, saying "I am not very optimistic that the plan will be found feasible." Reed says the meeting today will be with MSHDA, and he, along with another UCU mem- ber, "will try to get them to see eye to eye." Most likely, Reed says, the housing authority will reject the project, pleading lack of funds, and UCU will be forced to con- sider alternative proposals on a lesaer scale. "Hopefully," he adds however, "the housing authority will be honest and level with us so that we can find out just what we should be dong."t mnr- Reed explains the main prob- lem is that the state wants the project to be phased, so that only about 150 units are con- structed annually for the next four years. UCU desires all the units to be built at once, Reed says, so that it can keep rents down by taking advantage of quantity buying of fixtures. The present plans call for a unique semicircle of townhouse" "clusters." with one medium or high rise complex in the middle. The original occupants will members of the credit unions cluded in the corporation, with the possible exception of scat- tered public housing units which are expected to be deployed among the various segments of the project. Thereafter, mem- bership would be limited to mem- bers of the University com- munity.
