Phelps named Irish coach;
Ali offered Foreman bout

" SOUTH BEND, Ind. Richard "Digger" Phelps, 29, who last year
guided Fordham University to its best year in history, was named head
basketball coach at the Notre Dame University yesterday.
Phelps succeeds Johnny Dee, who resigned last week to return to
private law practice in Denver, Colo.
In his one season at Fordham, Phelps led the Rams to a 26-3 mark
and was named coach of the year in District Two of the National As-
sociation of College Basketball Coaches.
* BOSTON - Boxing promoter Sam Silverman said yesterday he
has offered Muhammad All $1 million or 35 percent of the live gate and
ancillary rights to fight 1968 Olympic heavyweight champion George
Foreman in Boston in September.
Daly to coach Penn
*" PHILADELPHIA - Charles "Chuck" Daly was named head
basketball coach at Penn yesterday, the second time in three years
Daly has inherited a team with almost no place to go but down.
Daly succeeds Dick Harter, who last season coached Penn to a 28-1
record and the No. 3 national ranking. Harter resigned recently to

Bruins rehire Johnson
* BOSTON - The Boston Bruins announced yesterday that Tom
Johnson, who coached the team to the 1970-71 National Hockey League
East Division title and its first Prince of Wales trophy in 30 years, has
signed a new two-year contract.
Mara keeps options open
* NEW YORK - New York Giants owner Wellington Mara con-
firmed Tuesday that he is in no way committed to moving his National
Football League team to New Jersey's proposed $200 million sports
complex in Hackensack.
The New Jersey Senate voted 28-2 Monday in favor of the project
and Mara, seeking to knock down rumors that the club is already com-
mitted to leaving Yankee Stadium, released the text of his "memoran-
dum of intent" with New Jersey.
"This memorandum is entered into solely to express a bona fide
intention on the part of each party to enter into negotiations which may
". .culminate in a binding agreement, and is in no way intended as an offer
or commitment by any of the parties, "it read.
Johnson goes under knife
BALTIMORE - Gus Johnson, captain of the Baltimore Bullets,
will undergo surgery today to repair cartilage damage to both knees.
The surgery is regarded as relatively minor when compared with

Mrs. Al Rosen plunges 19 stories
M " PHILADELPHIA - Mrs. Al Rosen, 41, wife of the former All-
Star third baseman of the Cleveland Indians, plunged to her death
? Monday night from the 19th floor of the Warwick Hotel.
The medical examiner's office ruled the death a suicide.
