Free VD tests made available

undergo tests for the disease
free of charge.
Previously, VD tests have cost
$5-10 when administered at
the health service.
Now, however, by calling the
health service and making an
appointment with any of i ts
regular physicians, students can
receive strictly confidential VD
tests - and the Washtenaw
County Health Department will
pick up the tab.
"We originally made a r -

ing for indigent students," says

ment decided to pay for care
in a private physician's office at
the health service, Anderson
says, rather than setting up a
separate VD free clinic.
"A specific clinic for VD
identifies people and perhaps
makes them reluctant to come.
By offering the tests through
our health service, it becomes
more like any other medical
procedure," he says.
The health department w il11
not follow up any VD testing by
the health service, Anderson
says, and "the utmost confi-
dentiality" will be preserved.

"We are pretty certain we are
treating most of the VD cases
on campus, based on county
statistics," Anderson s a y s .
"People are calling up all t h e
time seeking advice and making
appointments for tests."
"Offering VD tests through
the health service is far super-
ior to the VD clinic," Anderson
emphasizes. "This way kids can
see their own physician in t h e
privacy of his office. They can
call up anytime, and e ven
come to the Emergency Clinic
if they desire."
In addition, the health serv-
ice is presently working on an
arrangement to provide con-
traceptive services to indigents,
Anderson says. These services
presently are paid for by pa-
tients.
"The VD situation is not out
of control on campus," advises
Dr. Robert Anderson, director
of the health service. "The free
VD tests are simply a g o o d
public health measure."
Anderson says cases of t h e
venereal disease, gonorhea have
increased slightly on campus
this year, increasing the load
of such cases which the health
service handles to about 25 per
month. According to Anderson,
the number of syphillis c a s e s
handled annually has held
steady over the past several
years at about six.
