The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 13 to 7 to re- ject a bid by Sen. William Prox- mire, (D-Wis.), to delete the $85 million in SST funds voted by the House in a surprise move Wednesday., But the committee's chairman, Sen. Allen Ellender, (D-La.), previously a strong SST backer, voted with the minority and lat- er told newsmen: "I think it's still dead, Tou won't get t h e votes in the Senate. It's that simple." Box 42972 L.A., Cal. 90050 action centered mostly on how much it would cost to get the SST assembly program rolling again. The estimates range from a low of $200 million offered by SST's chief supporter, Sen. Warren G. Magnuson, (D- Wash.) to a possible $1 billion suggested by William Allen, board chairman of the Boeing Corp., prime SST contractor. In a news conference Allen said $500 million probably would be the minimum it would take to 'pick up the pieces" of the SST program. Before Boeing and other com- panies involved could start again, Allen said, all contracts would have to be renegotiated, undoubtedly at higher prices. And "this time, he said, th e goal should be not merely pro- duction of two SST prototypes but the construction of an American commercial passeng- er fleet. 0 Girls to be appointed as pages in Senate - --- -- ------ -- -------- - ---- - ------ ---- - -- ---------- -------- --- .. ........ ..... .... WASHINGTON (P) - The Sen- ate yesterday agreed for the first time to the appointments of girls as pages. Resolving the issue by voice vote after a six month behind the scenes struggle, the Senate went further and banned sex discrimi- nation in the appointment of Capitol policemen, elevator oper- ators and post office employes. As the Senate voted, arrange- ments were being made to swear in the first three girl pages to- day. They are appointees of Sens. Jacob Javits (R-N.Y.), Charles Percy, (R-Ill.), and Fred Harris, (D.-Okla.) Under the resolution, each sen- ator appointing a girl page must sign a written statement assum- NOW!- Tonight at 7-9 p~m. ing responsibility for her safe transportation to- and from the Senate and for her safety and supervision at her place of resi- dence. Javits told the Senate he is un- happy about this distinction be- tween male and female pages, but accepted it with the under- standing that it would apply only until completion of a planned dormitory for House, Senate, and Supreme Court pages in the vi- cinity of the Capitol building. Senate pages are 14 to 17 years old. In the House the minimum age is 16. Their salary rate is $7,380 a year.
