I . Wednesday, August 23, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY , .,- HRP split over state rrep rae (Continued from Page 3) Burghardt or Bob Alexander. Alexander, who has served this summer as party co-ordinator is given little chance of winning. His major drawbacks are his position on the moderate wing of the party, and his lack of as- sociation with the party's ideol- ogical leaders. Chester and Burghardt then, are the two most likely candi- dates. In terms of political outlook they are virtually identical. Both espouse a radical demo- cratic socialist point of view. They also hold a similar con- ception of the function of a radi- cal legislator - to use the post as a forum for presenting radical perspectives to a state-wide aud- ience. Their differences are largely stylistic. Burghardt - soft-spoken and articulate - is favored by some because of his ability to "sell' the party's radical politics to its basically left-liberal constituency. Chester, on the other hand, has a record of radical activism which dates back to the e a r l y sixties. Generally accepted as HRP's leading ideological theor- ist he is favored by many who see him as embodying the spirit of the party's "clear-cut radical alternative to liberal Democratic politics." At tomorrow's convention ses- sion, candidates will be nomi- nated for county offices. Nomin- ations for multi-county offices (including the 2nd Congressional District) and any state-wide of- fices will be taken up at the state HRP convention in Lansing on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 26-7. Last weekend, the party dis- cussed county and state represen- tative races in open convention, including discussions on which offices to run for. Those present recommended the party run in the following contests: 53rd District S t a t e Representative, County Commis- Page Nine OPEN 12:45 DAILY Shows: 1 :30, 3:20, 5,7, 9 Violent Action Dronia of Gangster Rivalry in America!
