STATE STREET BELFAST (P) - Protestant militants set up their own anti- bomb patrols in Belfast last night and threatened rough jus- tice to any bombers who get caught. The move followed a blast which wrecked a bar on Shan- kill Road, Belfast's Protestant heartland. Dozens of stores and houses were damaged and 55 people injured, though none ser- iously. A statement from the Ulster Defense Association (UDA), a Protestant citizens army which claims 40,000 members, said: "We warn the bombers if we catch them they will be subject to UDA justice." The explosion shattered a wa- ter main and unleashed a cas- cade that flooded the neighbor- hood for half an hour. The bomb, left in a parked car, devastated the .Standard Bar, a tavern patronized by Pro- testants. A 30-minute warning was giv- en and the bar, thronged with lunchtime drinkers, rapidly em- ptied. Security forces were able to clear much of the area. None of the 55 injured was believed seriously hurt. The car containing the bomb was ripped to ribbons and near- by shops and buildings were badly damaged. Army experts estimated the device contained 200 pounds of gelignite. About 20 minutes later an- other bomb shattered a filling station in the Antrirn Road dis- trict. First reports said no one was injured and it was believed that a warning had been given. At the same time, murder squad detectives were hunting for two gunmen who shot Pro- testant bartender William Spence, 32, in a Shankill bar late Wednesday night. Spence's death brought the death toll in Northern Ireland's sectarian strife between Protest- ants and Catholics to at least 510 in three years. The bartender was cleaning up after closing time when two men walked in asking for him. They clubbed Spence and pumped four bullets into his head and body. The killing - the 300th this year - came only four hours after the government announced a reward of about $122,500 for information leading to the cap- ture of assassins who have slain at least 40 persons in the past six weeks. Police believe some of the killings are the work of Pro- testant and Catholic revenge squads, settling old scores. But some slayings are feared to be the work of psychopathic killers acting with no motive. this fNgKSRD $1.50 8:3O John Roberts and Tony Barrand English beer hall, vaudeville, ballads, and humor.
