As Fischer left the s t a g e, Spassky sat down and gingerly reset the pieces to the position at the 69th move. when grand.. masters said he had made a ter- rible blunder. The champion reached out a hand and changed his play. Referee Lothar Schmid. him- self a grand master, lowered him- self into the opposite c h a i r. The two sat quite still u n t i t Schmid got up, and slowly Spass- ky followed. The American challenger for- get to a three-point lead over the Soviet titleholder by forc- ing him to resign after 74 mov- es aod 91f hours of play over two days. Fischer needs 4,! more points to wrest the title from Spassky, while the Russian must amass points to retain h i s crown. Play resumed after Thursday's adjournment with Spassky, play- ing the white pieces, in a seem- ingly hopeless position. He made a poor rook maneu- ver on the 69th move and ex- perts termed it a "terrible mis- take" which lost him the chance for a draw. Fischer pounced on the mistake, pressing the champion relent- lessly, until Spassky resigned. "Bobby poured more into this game than he ever did in his life," said his second, William Lombardy. "It was exquisite." With a maximum of 11 games remaining in the 24 game chess series, Fischer could win with a run of draws. The Brooklyn. N.Y.. chess wizard needs a total of 12- points to capture t h e title while the Russian neeids 12 points to retain it. Spassky had somewhat of an advantage in the game because the white pieces allowed him to open. But Fischer's unremitting attacks left Spassky in a bad position at the end of play on Thursday and he took half an hour to decide his sealed 42nd move. When play resumed Friday,.
