Page Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wednesdoy, August 2, 1972 records A musical menagerie of jazz and rock By RON URBACH Record: THE SNAKE; Janus JLS 3037 Artist: Harvey Mandell . Performance: 'Studio Sterile- Recording Quality: Excellent I have long held the belief that Harvey Mandel is the Rock "Sleeper" of the past five years. Very few people have heard of him, except those who live on the West Coast, particularly L.A., and yet he is one of the finest electric guitarists around. Although he has played exten- sively with Canned Heat, and they have played on his gigs and albums, Harvey Mandel is still mainly a musician's mu- sician. Philips had him for a while and cut some beautiful albums of Harvey, notably Games Guitars Play. and Cristo Redentor, but their promotion on them was horrendous, the al- bums didn't move, and Harvey Mandel did, over to Janus Re- cords where, they would say, he belongs. Maybe so. At first audition, I was not impressed with this album. The title cut was okay, but I felt very let down, espe- cially since I have been wait- ing for Mandel to surpass what I consider his finest work to date, Cristo Redentor, one of the most beautiful journeys into electric guitar I have heard. However, after listening to this album a few times, I began to really like it. Especially nice are "The Snake," "Peruvian Flake", and "Levitation." It is the one cut on the album where Don "Sugarcane" Harris is allowed more than a few perfunctory notes on his violin, Incidentally, Sugarcane Har- ris and Harvey Mandel are now in a group together, the Pure Food and Drug Act. If this al- bum is any indication of their ability to work together, their new group should be stunning. Production on this album was by Mandel and Skip Taylor of the Canned Heat Organization, and is superb. Art work earns the Schlock Artwork Award of the Year. Give this album a listening. Record: WHITE RABBIT; CTI 6015 Artist: George Benson Performance: Appropriately light Recording Quality: Superb really nice presence) This is a very mellow orches- trated jazz album, bordering on the topical. The five cuts are, "White Rabbit," "Theme from Summer of '42," "Little Train" (a take-off on a Villa-Lobos theme), "California Dreaming," and "El Mar." Featured artists incltde Ron Carter, Earl Klugh, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham (currently with the Mahavishnu Orchestra), Airto Moreira, and Hubert Laws. It is an impres- sive orchestra, and it does very well for the kind of music New Do you want money, a draft deferment, leadership and management training, self-confidence? If your answer is yes, then invest 1/ hour of your time to find out hsw yss obtain the above by attending the Army ROTC orientation at Room 200 in North Hall at 3:30 p.m. every day. George (or should I say CTI?) is trying to come across with. Benson gives a Brazilian flair to White Rabbit and throws in some horns for a nice Spanish touch. Eminently listenable, this cut impressed me as the kind of music you'd hear wafting through a J a z z Musicians Lounge at an airport, if such a thing existed. Very relaxing, not very demanding, and artistic- ally tight. The cut that really impresses me is "El Mar", one of Ben- son's original compositions. It is a nice excursion into Bra- zilian guitar and has the high- ly competent acoustic guitar accompaniment of one sixteen year old Earl Klugh, a brilliant guirtarist from Detroit. Earl has played with both Benson and Yusef Lateef and dedicat- ed followers of jazz might note his name and try to hear him out at Baker's it Detroit; he is destined for a very seminal musical career. Another young and extremely talented musician on this disc is Airto Moreira, the Brazilian percussionist. This man has played with practically every- one: Freddie Hubbard, Miles, Davis, Wayne Shorter and Weather Report, Herbie Han- cock, and on and on. He is now working on his own album for CTI, as well as jamming exten- sively with Ron Carter and Chic Corea. In summation, then: this is an easy listening album. It is not an outstanding work, and not a poor one. It is well done.
