All \hese items and more can be found in the weaving, ma- crame and leather booths at the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair. Fifteen booths will display hand- woven items for sale. There will be five booths offering macrame items and one featuring leather goods. Jane Hawkins and Joyce Jones will give the only planned de- monstrations of the arts of hand- weaving and macrame at their booth. Jones, a participant in t h e fair since its beginning 13 years agd, teaches weaving at the YMCA and the adult education division of the city public schools. Pleased with the recent up- surge of interest in weaving ard macrame, Jones says, "People in the fair today are better craftsmen. We have educated the public as to the fact t h a t hand- weaving is an art. She encourages all interested persons to take the time to learn the ancient arts of weaving and macrame. "Both are easy to learn, though macrame can be done with less equipment," she says. Weaving requires a loom, while macrame, the art of creative knot-tying. can be done with a soft board for anchoring te ma- terial. The novice need learn enly a few rudimentary maneuvers to master either art. Macrame, in fact, uses only two kinds of knots. After learning the basics, the range of possible variations in color, style, and type of i t e in desired is almost endless. AFTER THE FAIR.
