Wednesday, July 19, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY, Page Seven Wednesday, July 19, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven Potters to spin the wheel at local fair By JIM KENTCH "Now this, to a potterer, is beautiful." He held up a small porcelain vase that was fired a shade of crimson reminiscent of the color of a certain species of butterfly. "Yes, that certainly has aes- thetics," he said, putting the artifact back down. The man, Maxwell Reade, is. a professor of mathematics and a member of the Potters Guild. The Potters Guild is one of the many local organizations that are participating in the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair this year. The Potters Guild is running a booth where they give dem- onstrations and offer ' objects for sale. The demonstrations, given at I 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to- day through Friday, will ex- hibit the art of "throwing on the wheel." "Throwing on the wheel" is the correct term for what an uninformed layman might de- scribe as the shaping an ob- ject out of a mass of clay on a potter's wheel. Giving the demonstrations will be ,Maxwell Reade, who de- scribes himself as a "visiting barbarian"; Ed Lindberg, a pro- fessor of art; and Jim Heino- nen. The objects for sale include "anything made of pottery," Reade says. Both "slab" pieces - which are made with the use of a potters wheel and hand- built pieces will be sold. Bowls, pitchers, drinking mugs, plates, sugar bowls, free- form sculpture, and, of course, pots, are some of the more con-. ventional articles for sale. The price of each article is set by'the individual guild mem- ber who made the article. The price range is likely to be from a mere pittance of $3 to a sub- stantial $100. A certain percentage of the purchase price of each article goes to the guild itself. The Potters Guild, which oc- cupies an unobstrusive building at 201 Hill Street (the other side of the tracks) has been in existence for 22 years. The guild is a non-profit cooperative consisting of 40 members. Membership is by in- vitation only, due to the limited facilities. Members pay annual dues as part of their membership ob- ligations. The guild's only other source of" revenue is the per- centage it receives from the re- tailing 9f the members' work. The guild sponsors classes which are open to all interested persons during the regular school terms. Classes are usually taught by visiting professors and highly regarded potters. The guild's building contains all equipment necessary to pro- duce many varieties of pottery, including two kilns for glazing and potters' wheels. The process of making an ob- ject of clay requires two sepa- rate firings in the kiln. The second firing lasts about 24 hours at a maximum tempera- ture of 2,400 degrees Fahren- heit. Although the use of kilns at the Potter's Guild street art fair exhibit will be limited be- cause of the time factor, their exhibit and demonstrations are sure to be intriguing. And they promise to try not to get their nson and Hodges 100's caught B e n s o n and Hedges 100's caught in their work.
