STREET FAIR:
Artist branches out
with log sculptures

For those with a flair for
the "natural look" in art, out
of the forests and into the
streets comes Cecil North's log
sculpture exhibit.
The exhibit will run today
through Saturday at the Ann
Arbor Street Art Fair. North
will also be demonstrating the
"how" of his craft.
North, whose primary skill is
in painting, decided several
years ago to branch out into log
sculpting. A native of Colum-
bus, Ohio, he now teaches art
at Pioneer High and reshapes a
tree or two when he's not teach-
ing or painting.
"Generally- I cut my own
logs," says North. "My first in-

spiration came from some wood
that was left over after I built
my house here in Ann Arbor.
To North's way of thinking,
anyone who thinks logs are too
crude to be a good sculptural
medium is definitely barking up
the wrong tree.
"Logs are an excellent nat-
ural form," he says. "My works
include both human figures and
natural. abstracts. I generally
use black walnut, but have also
done works in maple, apple,
and oak.
"The only limitation I place
on my sculpture is that each
work be small enough to carry."
North, who seems to be as
adept with a palette knife as a
chain saw, is best known for
his paintings and wax-base en-
caustics, as well as more tra-
ditional sculptural forms.
He has been a steady contrib-
utor to the art since helping to
organize it 13 years ago.
His unusual collection of log
sculptures and paintings can be
found down at the southeast
corner of the Diag.
