The Chicago White Sox slug- ger, who leads the American League with 19 home runs and 61 runs batted in, received 1,- 092,758 of the 3,171,556 votes cast in the nationwide poll of fans. Allen acquired from the Los An- geles Dodgers in a major winter trade, easily won, the starting first base assignment over De- troit's Norm Cash, the runnerup with 729,753 votes. Only one other player in the American League received more than one mililon votes. That was veteran third baseman Brooks Robinson of Baltimore, who eas- ily got the nod at third base over Oakland's Sal Bando, 5,- 041,128 votes to 362,360. The only team with more than one representative on the start- Gabriel lost to LA; lung Collapses LONG BEACH, Calif., (-) - Quarterback Roman Gabriel, field general for the Los Angeles Rams club suffered a collapsed lung in the Ram's opening prac- tice yesterday. Gabriel, 31, a veteran of 10 National Football League sea- sons, was hospitalized and a tube inserted into the ailing right lung. It remained prob- lematical when he would return to the team. The quarterback had been throwing in the first drill for the veteran players at Long Beach State College when he told trainer Cash Birdwell: "I don't think I can practice any longer. I can't breathe." Directed to lie down, Gabriel didn't improve and was taken to Long Beach Hospital, about a mile away. It was first report- ed he underwent surgery, but later the report was that he went to su gery for insertion of the tube to reinflate the dam- aged lung. Dr. Jules T. Rasinski, the Rams team physician, first es- timated Gabriel could be side- lined from five weeks to the full season. Later reports were more optimistic, that Gabriel might return to contact drills in a month. Gabriel, a collegiate star at North Carolina State, has been the No. 1 Ram. quarterback since 1965. His Rams records include 1,540 completions in 2,990 passes attempts for 20,- 196 pards and 142 touchdowns. His best season was 1969 when he was honored as the Most Valuable player in the NFL. Carew polled 832,- 055 votes to 411,253 for runnerup Cookie Rojas of Kansas City. Reggie Jackson of Oakland topped the outfielders in the vot- ing with 902,421. Joining him in the starting outfield will be Carl Yastrzemski of Boston, 603,151, and Bobby Mercer of New York, 506,241. Detroit's Bill Freehan will be the starting catcher having out- polled Cleveland's Ray Fosse 767,538 to 483,366. Hank Aaron, bidding to over- take Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list, led a groan of four repeaters on the National League All-Star team announced earlier by Kuhn. Aaron, whose 19 home runs this season boosted his career total to 658, swept to his eighth straight starting berth and 13th over-all as he led all outfielders in the record response of fan balloting throughout the United States and Canada. Aaron received 1,116,694 of the 3,171,556 votes cast. Last year, 2,396,895 votes were tabulated. The top vote-getter, however. in the NL was catcher Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds. Bench, named to the starting team for the fourth straight time, received 1,229,677 votes to 726,893 for runnerup Manny San- guillen of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Two Pirates will join Aaron in the starting outfield. Roberto Clemente drew 1,091,423 votes to place second to Aaron among the outfielders and earn a starting berth for the sixth time, but his first since 1967. Willie Star- gell got 717,597 votes for his second straight starting selec- tion. In addition to Bench behind the plate, the Reds will have Joe Morgan at second base. Morgan, acquired frotethe Hous- ton Astros over the winter, edged out Chicago's Glenn Beck- ert for the starting spot, 654 035 votes to 640,748. Houston's Lee May, acquiredt from Cincinnati in the Morgan trade, will be the starting first baseman, having received 688. 581 votes to beat out former teammate Tony Perez. Morgan and May will both be starting for the first time. The closest race was for shrt- stop, where Chicago's Don Kes- singer nipped New York's Bud Harrelson by 3,000 votes, 665,- 921 to 062,921. It was the Iourth time as a starter for Kessinger who lost out to Harrelson last year.
