By DIANE LEVICK What's the best Mother's Day gift that a man can give his wife? Well, accordingsto Dr. Edith Pelz, it's a vasectomy. Pelz, a lecturer in the psy- chology dfartment, launched a vasectomy campaign last Feb- ruary with the aid of Ann Ar- bor's Ecology Center to pro- mote the male sterilization op- eration as a means of birth control. Her husband, Prof. Donald Pelz, a program director at the Institute of Social Research, has undergone the operation himself. Pelz says, "My husband and I are delighted with our vasec- tomy, and we wanted to share our joy with other couples through this campaign." Pelz has publicized the cam- paign in local newspapers with ads signed by persons who have undergone vasectomies. To clear up one possible ms- conception, Pelz says, "This campaign is not addressed to the young male population. I'm ot in favor of eliminating a n y - body's posterity. This is aimed at happily married fathers over 30 with a minimum of two or three children." She also offers medical proof to explode the myth of vasec- GO INTO YOUR OWN BUSINESS "On A Shoestring" Make your furture secure operat- ing a Correspondence Club. "T h e operation has no impact on the man's masculinity or sexual en- joyment," according to Pelz. Pelz claims that the opera- tion puts spontaneity back into the sexual relationship since there is no fear of unwanted pregnancy. She says, "Sex can be on the spur of the moment again. We can light a symbolic pyre of rubber, plastic and chemical products in time for Mother's Day," According to Dr. Jeffrey. Cole of the Health Service, the oper- ation, which takes about 10 minutes to perform, is not re- versible. According to Pelz, after ap- proximately eight weeks and a verification by a doctor from the man's seminal fluid sample, the couple can safely stop us- ing other means of birth con- trol.
