Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, June 20, 1972 'age welv THE ICHIAN DALY Tesda,.Jne20-17 'The longest bloody mile' (Continued from Page 3) would be dragged out only after dark. The stubborness of the North Vietnamese and their unwilling- ness to yield Route 13 was dra- matically visible. When Vietna- mese Skyraiders bombed a half- mile north of "the Anthill," black puffs of rapid antiaircraft fire punctuated their flight pat- terns. Artillery crews in the fire bases along Route 13, who tried to carve a path for tanks,.keep their ears alert for the whoosh of rockets that sporadically but accurately fall among them. The mortars and rockets that hit the tanks and rangers as they deployed for yesterday's assault came within seconds of their arrival at "the Anthill." This was ample evidence of con- tinuing coordination between the North Vietnamese forward observers and the rocketeers in the rear. Because of the heavy blows received in the first five min- utes, the attack never gained the momentum, the American advisers had hoped for. Tanks raced for cover, and the Vietna- mese rangers who rode up with the armored vehicles clambered into foxholes occupied by troops DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN The Daily Official Bulletin is an official pubication of the Univer- sity of Michigan. By nightfall the tanks were still maneuvering to gain some advances under heavy fire. The soldiers settled down for anoth- er night of viscious grenade fighting that has characterized every hour since April. With one more of a handful of American advisers dead, kill- ed by a rocket round, a sole American captain was on duty at "the Anthill." He would spend the night awake beside his radio, ready to call in the power of the U.S. Air Force in case the North Vietnamese de- cided to renew their own offen- sive.
