Now, at least some help is lt forthcoming. Gov. William Milliken Wed- nesday approved use of some 425,000 acres of government-con- trolled farmland by growers in 24 drought-stricken counties. Under the agerement, farmers will be allowed to pasture or harvest hay set aside under the Cropland Adjustment Program, similar to thesoil bank. Payments to farmers to retire this land from production will be reduced an average 25 per cent, state officials added. Meanwhile, federal loans are reportedly in the offing for grow- ers in western and southwestern Michigan devastated by a hard freeze earlier this week. Officials 'said they expect a half dozen counties to be desig- nated disaster areas after dam- age assessments are tabulated, probably next Wednesday. Counties involved were: Wex- ford, Missaukee, Iosco, Osceola, Clare, Gladwyne, Arenac, Kent, Gratiot, Newago, Mecosta, Isa- bella, Midland Bay, Huron, Mus- kegon, . Ottawa, Saginaw, Tus- cola, Sanilac, Clinton, Shiawas- see, Lapeer, and Macomb.
