Chilean cabinet
offers to resign
as tension rises
SANTIAGO, Chile (U) - President Salvador Allende's
Cabinet offered to resign yesterday amid growing anti-
Marxist opposition in Chile and internal dissension in the
leftist government.
A terse announcement from the presidential palace
said the 13 Cabinet ministers handed in letters of resigna-
tion to facilitate Allende in any planned changes within his
Popular Unity coalition.
Allende can accept or reject the resignations.

erning Popular Unity alli-
ance.
As Chile's economic difficul-
ties have worsened and opposi-
tion to the government has
grown, one section of the coali-
tion has urged an "acceleration
of the revolutionary process,"
notably some members of Al-
lende's Socialist party.
But the orthodox, Moscow-
line Communists have urged a

Yale ends
programs
for ,ROTC
NEW HAVEN, Conn. tP) -
Yale University, which formed
the nation's first Reserve Of-
ficer Training Corps unit in 1916,
formally ended the military pro-
gam on its campus yesterday.
In a simple ceremony before
commencement exercises for
2,30iiundergraduaes and grad-
uate degree candidates, commis-
sions were presented to Yale's
last four Navy ensigns, its ias
Army second lieutenants and 10
Reserve officers from both
branches of the service.
The Army and Navy both an-
nounced in 1970 they were phas-
ing out their programs at Yale
in the face of a University de-
cision to strip them of academic
credit.
The decision had come after
student protests about the pro-
gram.
Yale set up its Army ROTC
unit on student request shortly
after Congress created the Re-
serve Officer Training Corps in
1916, on the eve of American
entry into World War I.
The Army unit at Yale sup-
plied a number of field artillery
officers for the fight against Ger-
many, and a grateful French
government afterward presented
the university with a canon field
piece known as a "French 75."
In 1926, Yale was again a
founder of a national ROTC pro-
gram, this time as one of six
colleges setting up branches of
the then-new Naval ROTC.
Yesterday's ceremonies form-'
ally closed the Naval ROTC seg-
ment.
The Army segment had finish-
ed its training 1 a s t year, but
some who had been enrolled did-
n't complete work for their un-
dergraduyate degrees until yes-
terday.

force the government to accel-

Allende is expected to address
the nation sometime this week
as rumors circulate in the capi-
tal of an impending Cabinet
shakeup.
It appeared from various re-
ports that Allende will come out
for the Communists' moderate
approach.
