WASHINGTON (A3! - If you like sex the chances are good you'll like marijuana, a govern- ment commission reports. But it cautions that the drug is no aphrodisiac, nor does it height- en sexual enjoyment for all us- ers. The National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse said It found evidence that mari- juana appears to intensify pleas- urable experiences and heighten the senses for many users, even though parts of these effects may be psychological. "It is this fact which pro- bably explains why substantial proportions of marijuana users characterize their sexual exper- iences under the influence of the drug as particularly intense, prolonged, sensuous and pleas- urable," the commission said. It said substantial numbers of persons report they are more interested in sex after smoking pot, and found evidence that marijuana relaxes inhibitions and reduces a person's normal restraints against sex, allowing users to respond more freely to sexual desires. But even so, marijuana isn't the aphrodisiac that many of its fans claim it to be, the com- mission said. Divorce law in Italy may face repeal ROME fA) - Strong gains by the Neo-Fascist party in Italy's parliament elections this week have put the future of the country's 15 - month - old di- vorce law in doubt. The ' Neo-Fascists and the dominant Christian Democrats, bitter opponents on most issues, are united in their opposition to divorce. With the election giv- the two parties a majority in the new parliament, their opposition to divorce seems certain to force a national referendim on the issue. An organization of Roman Catholic laymen set the referen- dum machinery moving last year by collecting 1.6 million signa- tures in favor of it. Pro-divorce parties hoped to prevent a vote. Since the bill passed in De- cember 1970, more than 50,000 persons received divorces. Pope Paul VI deplored the new law and called it a wound to Vatican - Italian relations. Many bishops joined with Chris- tian Democratic and Fascist of- ficials in seeking the popular referendum which might repeal the divorce act. The law grants divorce only to couples who have lived apart for at least six years and in ex- treme cases such as when one spouse has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Despite his party's stand, Neo-Fascist Secretary Giorgio Almirante won a divorce from his Roman Catholic wife a few months ago. But he claims di- vorce is bad for most Italians. It said research indicates generally that the more a per- son uses marijuana and the more he or she expects it to intensify sexual pleasure, the more likeiy it is to do so. Research also showed t h a t marijuana users are more sex- ually active than non-users. For example, the commission said, one survey of more than 500 college undergraduates found that 72 per cent of marijuana users had engaged in premarital sex, while only 34 per cent of nonusers had done so. The commission's findings on marijuana and sex occupy five pages of a 1,282-page appendix to its main report, released ear- lier this year.
