The Rev. Ralph Abernathy, head of SCLC, made the an- nouncement Wednesday to an audience attending a tribute to the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. "We are organizing the poor to build Resurrection City II in the midst of the rich resorts be- cause the blacks, the young and the poor must give a message to the Democratic party," Aber- nathy said. In 1968, the SCLC sponsor- ed a tent city in Washington to dramatize demands before leg- islators. It was called Resurrec- city p1ns tion City and lasted about six weeks. "We will put the iithe Dem- ocrats, on notice that we will not give our support for the same old crumbs they have been tossing out for y-ars." Ab- ernathy said. "We will tell them we want the whole thing no more cheap poverty programs, no more moon explorations while doing nothing about the valleys of injustice on earth. no more Spiro Agnews passing o u t moon rocks across the world when he should be passing out bread here in Chicago, and no more blacks fighting a rich man's war," Abernathy said. Abernathy said he hopes about 3,000 persons will participate in the demonstration. EASIER METHOD New screening test for lead poisoning devised NEW YORK OP) - A simple and reliable mass screening test for lead poisoning, from a drop of blood by finger puncture, was announced yesterday by New York University (NYU). "If field teals confirm itshvalue," a university spokesman said, "its use should allow every child between 1 and 6 years of age in this country to be tested for exposure to lead and should contribute greatly to the eradication of lead poisoning." Many young children contract lead poisoning by eating the high lead content paint which is often found in old, run-down urban houses. Lead poisoning can lead to either death or permanent brain damage. Five per cent of urban children between 1 and 6 show elevated lead levels in their blood when tested by conventional methods. The conventional methods were termed cumbersome by the university, however. They involved drawing a quantity of blood and subjecting it to a complicated laboratory analysis. Dr. Sergio Piomelli, professor of pediatrics at the NYU School of Medicine, has developed a method to measure rapidly and ac-. curately a substance in red blood cells that signals the presence of elevated lead levels, NYU said. "The test is rapid and inexpensive." NYU added. "With this technique, it appears possible that blood samples could be collected by finger puncture on a piece of filter paper and mailed to a central laboratory." The test measures substances called free erythrocyte prophyrins- FEP. In studies of the test done with the New York City Health Department it was found that the FEP concentration increases with increasing lead level. "Thus the value of the FEP test is not limited to the diagnosis of severe lead intoxication," NYU said, "but can be used as a method for early detection."
