Thursday, June 8, 1972 THE MICHIGAN, DAILY Page Eleven- Tig;? y":.. ers tamed by Ran; 3; * irds From Wire Service Reports The Detroit Tigers finally had a bad day yesterday, losing their own game 4-1 to California's flame-thrower Nolan Ryan and seeing rival Baltimore break its five game loss streak with a 11-2 pasting of Minnesota. Oakland, leaders of the West, rolled past the returning-to-nor- malcy Cleveland Indians, 10-4, but Chicago kept close behind Oakland with a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sex. Magic Number: 109 S... For the first in a long time the Tiger's magic number didn't shrink yesterday as the Bengals lost and the Birds won. But 109 is pretty low. Ken McMullen started the Angel fifth with a single and Leroy Stanton and John Stephen- son, two more ex-Mets followed with singles through the box for the first run. Leo Cardenas then doubled in both Stanton and Stephenson before Niekro, 1-1, could retire Ryan. One more Angel run came in the eighth off ex-Astro and Card Chris Zachary. Ex-Red, Card, and Indian Vada Pinson walked, moved to third on ex-Royal Bob Oliver's hit and scored on a bounder off Dick McAuliffe's shoulder. The Orioles ended their loss streak at the expense of Minne- sota, 11-2, which slipped further behind Western Division leading Oakland. The Oriole batters were led by young Bobby Grich, one of three youngsters in the reshuffled Oriole lineup. Grich belted a three run home run, his first of the season, in the first inning to give the Birds' an early lead off Jim Perry. Veterans Dave Johnson and Boog Powell and Brooks Robin- son also contributed to the cause, perhaps saving themselves from the wrath of manager Earl Weaver who said Tuesday night that perhaps some of his veto- rans are "over the hill." Johnson drove home two runs while Powell and the only Rob- inson left in town each added two hits and one RBI. The Twins, who now trail Oak- land by five games helped the Orioles out with four errors, three of them in the fifth when Baltimore scored five runs. Oakland's batters were in fine form, rapping out 14 hits in- cluding two home runs as they gave Cleveland its twelfth loss in its last 14 games. Benefitting from the hitting barrage was lefthander Ken Holtzman who pitched a nifty 14-hitter for his ninth win of the year, tying with Mickey Lolich and Gaylord Perry as the ma- jor's winningest pitcher. Joe Rudi and Mike Epstein hit the home runs, both off Dick Tidrow, as the A's blew one lead but then came back to win. Rudi's blast started Oakland's three run first inning rally and Epstein followed two batters later with a two-run smash. Cleveland rallied for three runs in the second to tie the score, the key hits being singles by Jack Brohamer, Eddie Leon, and Alex Johnson. But Oakland scored one run in the third and then four more in the fourth, shelling out Tid- row, 4-6, as they erupted for four more hits, the biggest one a two-run triple by Rudi. Oakland's other prime chal- lenger in the West, Chicago, was led by its team leader, Dick Al- len, for the 2-1 win over the Red Sox. Allen's triple brought home Mike Andrews with the first Chi- cago run in the -first inning and Andrews drove home the winner in the fourth to give ex-Yankee Stan Bahnsen (does anyone re- member Rich McKinney?) his seventh win. Bahnsen is now 7-6. A n d r e w s delivered in the fourth, off loser Luis Tiant, 1-2, followingdsingles by Ed Herr- mann and Rich Morales and a walk to Pat Kelly with a sacri- fice fly. Among the lesser lights in the American League, Kansas City came from behind to edge Mil- waukee, 5-4, and New York used a big third inning to overcome Texas 7-5. Amos Otis' two-run double in the eighth gave the Royals and reliever Tom Burgemier, 4-1, its victory. Milwaukee had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth on Ellie Rodriguez' single. For the Yankees, it took six consecutive singles and a sacri- fice fly to score six runs in the third and knock out Ranger starter Jim Shellenback, 1-3. Maj'ors end player draft NEW YORK W - Major league baseball clubs, possibly pointed in that direction by the quick success of Pete Broberg and Burt Hooton, reached out for pitching help yesterday in the secondary phase of their annual draft. Bob Lesslie, a fireballing right-hander at Kansas State University, was made the No. 1 pick by the Los Angeles Dodg- ers, and by the time the first round was over a dozen pitch- ing prospects had been tapped. zinski cracked a two-run double to highlight a three-run sixth inning last night that carried Philadelphia to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros, ending the Phillies' lbsing streak at nine games. Steve Carlton, 6-6, with relief help from Darrell Brandon in the eighth inning, picked up the victory, only the second for the Phillies in the last 21 games. Carlton, who developed a sore back in the seventh, had drop- ped five straight devisions. Reds rock Mets NEW YORK - Tony Perez drove in four runs, three with a first-inning double, and reliever Tom Hall snuffed out a late- game rally as the Cincinnati Aanta Bsraves last ngt.
