Directors like Jan Kadar, jiri Menzel, Milos Forman and Ivan Passer brought to the screen films of sensitivity and social awareness that most Americans thought im- possible from an Eastern Euro- pean country. But with the Soviet invasion of 1968, the Czech "new wave" ended. Milos Forman, Jan Kad-' ar, and Ivan Passer ended up in the United States and t h e Czech film industry regressed to circa 1950, producing party propaganda films. In the United States, t h e Czech directors produced a chain of mediocre commercial films, including Angel Levine and Loves of a Blonde. Adrift, directed by Kadar, is the last film of the Czech "new wave." Shot mostly during the summer of 1968 before the Rus- sian invasion, assembled and re- leased three years later, it is finally reaching large movie audiences in the United States. It is a traditional film which displays Kadar's masterful com- mand of the cinematic medium. The film is based on a novel by the Hungarian, Lajos Zilahy, which provides the framework for the tense psychological tone of the movie. The story is circular and un- folds as a disjointed, often fuz- zy, flashback. A poor fisherman rescues a beautiful girl f r o m the Danube River and his wife nurses her back to health. Anada remains with the fam- ily as a companion for the fish- erman's wife, but becomes the cause of discord within the fam- ily. The husband is torn be- tween love for his young and not unattractive wife and the beauty of the mysterious strang- er. Tension increases for the hus- band until his wife comes down with typhus. He decides to pois- on his wife with an overdose of her medicine. However, just as he is about to give his wife the lethal dose, Anada disappears in- to the river for a second a n d final tine. After a frantic search, the husband realizes that Anada is gone and then suddenly re- members the poison he had left for his wife. In the final sequence he rush- es toward his home as the cam- era pulls away - and his house fades farther and farther into the background. Presumably, he has lost both his wife and the stranger he never quite pos- sessed. Jan Radar is best known for Shop on Main Street, a film that reduced the ominous as- pects of fascism to a personal level. Adrift operates on t h i s same personal level but with a more romantic theme. Its classic structure, of man pursuing an unobtainable beauty has univer- sal implications. The setting adds to the ambi- ance of the story. The country- side of the Danube River and the everglades north of Bratis- lava are richly captured by the images of Vladimir Novotny. Rade Markovic and Milena Dra- vic provide intense and believ- able performance. Levels of reality are import- ant in Adrift and the film moves freely between actual events and those interrupted by the fisher- man's imagination. It is the viewer's own ability or desire to be caught in the film's flow of events which determine his level of interest. For some people Adrift may not be an easy film to under- stand, but it's worth taking the time. Four arrests for Diag dig (Continued from Page 1) . Plamondon also announced before turning herself in, that "the Tribal Council has decided that the weekend of July 16 and 17 would be a good time to do the whole thing over again." "Some people are even talking of covering the whole city with bomb craters," she added later.
